Ten Priorities Platform Focuses on Job Creation, and Investment in Education
Ed Coppinger, Candidate for State Representative in the 10th Suffolk District, today unveiled his 10 Priorities for the 10th District. Ed’s priorities are reflective of the countless conversations he has had with residents across the district.
“For the last few months, I have spent a lot of time carefully listening to the residents of West Roxbury, Roslindale and Brookline,” said Coppinger. “I did not come up with these priorities – the residents of the 10th Suffolk District did and I am committed to taking their priorities to the State House as their next State Representative.”
Coppinger, a father of four and a local businessman who has spent his professional career in the private sector, has created a platform that places special emphasis on putting Massachusetts residents back to work, supporting small businesses and a renewed investment in education. More specifically, his outline includes the following priorities he will tackle as State Representative: Read more
A New Era in Parkway Politics
July 15, 2010
Well it is something that doesn’t occur often in such a political hotbed as the Parkway, but there are currently three open positions to represent the Parkway Area. With the sudden departure of John Tobin as the district city council, there are now openings in 3 political offices that represent the Parkway; State Senate, State Representative and District City Council.
It is the first time a over 20 years that the Parkway will have new representation in all three seats. This, along with a hotly contested Governor’s Race, should make for an interesting political season. While many are enjoying the dog days of summer down the Cape, or elsewhere, political hopefuls have their “machines” hard at work to convince you why they should be the next to represent you on Beacon Hill and City Hall.
Democrats Mike Rush (West Roxbury) and Michael Walsh (Westwood) are facing off against Republican Brad Williams (West Roxbury) for Senator Marian Walsh’s open seat.
Democrats, Matt Benedetti, Ed Coppinger, Bob Joyce, Pam Julian, Paul Sullivan, and Kelly Ann Tynan, are all attempting to succeed Mike Rush in the House.
And as of today, the race for Tobin’s Council seat (while not even officially a race) appears to be a one-man show with Matt O’Malley’s announcement coming almost immediately following Tobin’s. James Hennigan Jr. and Tobin aide Dave Isberg are also rumored to be mulling a run, as are several others from both the Parkway and Jamaica Plain.
It will be an interesting Fall in the Parkway. Two Words: House Signs. What are your thoughts? Who do you think will be the next Senator? Rep? Councilor?

Michael Walsh Announces Candidacy for State Senator
June 4, 2010
Attorney Michael (“Mike”) Walsh has announced his candidacy for the State Senate seat in the Suffolk/Norfolk District, which includes Boston (ward 20, sixteen precincts of ward 18 and two precincts in ward 19), and the towns of Dedham, Norwood and Westwood.
In announcing his candidacy, Walsh said he is “running for State Senate because hard-working families are struggling in these challenging economic times and strong leadership is needed. Massachusetts is tired of the arguments, innuendos, gamesmanship, deals and patronage that have come to characterize the state legislature.”
Walsh was born the son of a retired Boston Police Officer and a retired Vice President of Meetinghouse Cooperative bank in Dorchester, both of whom were from Mission Hill. He grew up in Dorchester, the oldest of four, and lived in West Roxbury for eleven years. He moved to Westwood four years ago. Read more
Stopping House & Car Break-Ins
April 9, 2010
Answer lies in addressing root cause and trends associated with crime.
An Op-Ed by Paul Sullivan
Like many residents, I am disturbed by the recent rash of house and car break-ins in and around West Roxbury. As a former assistant district attorney for nearly 3 years, I worked with victims and the police to prosecute those who perpetrated these types of crimes.
Those who commit these types of crimes often possess common traits: lack of education, substance abuse issues, and unemployment. Instead of trying to address these issues, we seek a quick fix and continue to lock up offenders rather than addressing the root of the problem. Police and those in law enforcement are not at fault and sometimes we are left with no other choice but to seek incarceration. The real problem lies with policies. Rather than continuing with the status quo and hoping things will change, I want to break the chain by addressing the issues that lead to these behaviors. Read more

Coppinger Looks to Serve as State Rep
March 2, 2010
Monday afternoon, before a crowd of 40 supporters, Ed Coppinger announced that he is a candidate for State Representative in the 10th Suffolk District. “I plan to ask the people of West Roxbury, Roslindale, and South Brookline to place their trust in me to be their voice in the Massachusetts House of Representatives,” said Coppinger. “I am running so that I can actively work to grow our economy and create jobs, improve our schools, and hold Beacon Hill accountable.”
At his rally, Coppinger talked about how looming budget cuts could affect the district. “I chose to announce my candidacy in front of the West Roxbury Library because this institution is a cornerstone of the community. While it, like so many great resources in the district, brings people together, our Libraries are currently facing massive cuts in state funding this year. Residents of Brookline, Roslindale, and West Roxbury need someone who will stand up for keeping our communities strong.” Read more
Ed Coppinger to Announce He is Running for State Rep
February 24, 2010
ParkwayBoston’s own Ed Coppinger will be announcing within the next week that he will be a candidate for State Representative. Coppinger will be joining 3 others who have already announced their candidacy.
Ed Coppinger will take a leave of absence from ParkwayBoston. We will give him the opportunity to publish his press release here as the others have done so already. After that, ParkwayBoston will not discuss the Rep Race at all so there will not be an appearance of candidate preference.
Clarification: The editors of ParkwayBoston will not be discussing (editorializing) the local 10th Suffolk District State Representative race, however we will be reporting on the events of the election as it progresses. Remember to come to ParkwayBoston for all of your local news
With that we wish all the candidates well and look forward to having Ed back with us after the elections.
Senator Walsh Decides to Step Down
January 27, 2010
Below is a letter from Senator Marian Walsh Announcing her decision not to run for re-election.
Dear Friends, Soon the campaign season will be upon us and the voters and candidates alike will be engaged in a very important civic exercise. As your State Senator and friend I wish that it were possible to convey my gratitude to you personally. Since 1989, the shared sacrifices of my supporters, staff, family, friends and husband have made my public service possible and worthwhile. Politics and all the good that it can do has certainly been an important part of my life. From our campaigns, to our neighborhood meetings, to the legislative caucuses, to the floor debates – the positive energy and successful outcomes are too many to list. Entering public life, for me was a profoundly personal decision. I have loved it because I have been in your service. Your hopes and dreams have been my fuel, whether it be a community concern, a civil right, or a matter of economic and social justice. It is time now for me to contribute in other ways – outside of elective office. Next fall, I will not stand for reelection to the Massachusetts State Senate for the Suffolk and Norfolk District. I do intend to be of service in other venues, and I look forward to the next chapter with excitement and gratitude. With the deepest appreciation, I remain at your service.
Very truly, Marian
