Rain on Me
July 1, 2009
While it may be a timeless classic by The Who (it’s actually “Reign On Me” for you nitpickers), I don’t know if I can take any more of it. Rain…horrible $%&*@% RAIN!!!
I get it. Water is soooooo good for the environment and it’s critical to the earth’s existence blah blah blah. It also makes sea monkeys grow and tends to flood my basement. I’m no Dick Albert but I’d say the New England area is playing with house money with regards to all this rainfall.
It’s July and the last time I saw the sun it was through the haze and fog caused by the rainstorm that preceded it. If I recall correctly last Fourth of July was a complete washout and this year stands to be no different. Actually the forecast looks to be in our favor by Friday but we’ve all heard this song plenty of times. I’ll believe it when I feel it…the sun that is. Read more
Finally!
April 16, 2009
It’s still somewhat cold outside. I’ve seen the sun infrequently. While the weather is telling one story the calendar is telling a different one. New hope arises when we leave March and begin April. This was one of the worst winters in recent memory. I, like all of you, am ready, willing and able to bid good riddance to another arctic winter.
As you know I am a self proclaimed fair weather fan in the truest sense of the term. In fact I dedicated my inaugural article to baseball, beer and eighty degree days (http://www.parkwayboston.com/?p=13). Spring means many things to many people. For me it means the prospect of nice weather and more importantly the start of the Sox season.
Each spring I still get the inevitable optimism that the Sox can win it all…again. It was only a few short years ago I wouldn’t have been able to use the term “again”. It was a few short years ago that having this happy-go-lucky optimism was nothing more than a fool’s errand. In fact the “this is the year” mentality was becoming something of a national joke. March Madness Grips the Parkway
March 19, 2009
Well if you didn’t get in by now you are too late, but 57 of you have joined the Parkway Pick’em Bracket Challenge 2009. The prizes this year will include gifts for the top 3 teams and a special prize for the last place team. Many thanks go out to The West, Corrib and Doyle’s, who have been kind enough to donate gift certificates to this years winners and losers.
So let’s here what you have to say. Is your bracket in jeopardy already? Who is the “team of destiny” this year? Can coach Cal take Memphis where UMAss only dreamed of going? Will BC play long enough to last the weekend? Let the Games Begin.

Facebook: Bringing You Back to Fifth Grade One “Status Update” at a Time
February 23, 2009
As is the case with just about all technological breakthroughs I am last to join the party. Not sure if it’s because I grew up with parents that were born during the depression area valuing what they have as opposed to chasing the latest and greatest. I find myself on a daily basis saying something to the effect of “what’s wrong with what I currently have? It works fine. I don’t need a new one.”
In some cases it’s a completely new technology. Cell phones are a great example. The late 90′s going into the new millennium we saw how readily accessible cell phones became. Lower cost and variety of calling plans were creating an entirely new telecommunications market. At the time I was convinced that cell phones were lame and that a majority of people who were buying them were just trying to inflate their self importance. If you couldn’t tell by now cynicism comes quite naturally to me. Read more
New Year’s Revolution
January 20, 2009
The definition of Revolution as provided by Merriam-Webster: “a sudden, radical or complete change”. When you get down to it, isn’t that what your New Year’s resolution really is?With the close of another year we take stock of what we’ve accomplished and identify goals for the New Year upon us. For many of us the goals are similar. Shed a few pounds, quit smoking, save money, go for that promotion at work or even look for a new job (although not recommended in the state of our current economy). All of these goals require a radical change from your current behavior to successfully achieve your objectives.
I know many people who cut out the drinking until St. Patrick’s Day. Due in large part to fact that many party it up from Turkey Day through New Year’s it makes pretty good sense to take it easy for a while. It might also explain why St. Patty’s Day (depending on the venue chosen) is such a sloppy mess. Read more
The Anatomy of a Run
November 30, 2008
I finally did it. I got off the couch and hit the pavement. I’m back on the horse that has bucked me off countless times. Yes, I’m finally running again.
My brother, Cousin Francis, informed me a few weeks ago that he was planning on running Walter’s Run on Sunday December 14th. As many of you know Walter’s Run starts and ends at the YMCA on Bellevue Street. Check out their website for the history of the run as well as sign up and race info: http://www.waltersrun.org/
It’s a 5K (3.1 miles) and having the illustrious running heritage that I do (my dad Big Al has run 27 marathons) I figured with a little bit of training I should be able to knock off a 5K. Read more
Love and Marriage
November 6, 2008
Isn’t life supposed to slow down a little once Labor Day rolls around? Not for this guy. Between work, family and “The Wedding of the Century” I haven’t had much time to come up for air. As you might remember the Hill-Ree-Ree was marrying her second cousin the Hill-Gilly. He’s a looker, has a full row of teeth on the top and them fancy removable teeth on the bottom. She snagged a whopper that’s for sure. I won’t bore you with the details, you’ve been to a wedding before. I will tell you this: it was one of the nicest weddings I’ve been to.
For me it was a pleasant surprise, being indoors and all. I’m used to weddings taking place in a field with a goat serving as the best man. Come to think of it, many of the folks on the fancy dance floor acted a lot like my cousins would after drinking too much of Grampy’s moonshine. Nevertheless it was a great time and the day went off without a hitch.
As we were watching the newly married couple drive off into the sunset a thought occurred to me. Does he really know what he’s in for? I’ve been married for five years so we pretty much have everything down to a science at this point, aside from child care of course, that’s a new adventure everyday. Read more
This Totally Sox
October 28, 2008
As you can see I had some pretty sweet seats at Game 5. As you may also notice I know how to get Fenway Park arockin’. When this pic was taken Naughty by Nature’s “Hip Hop Hooray” was playing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No7jdP2A0N0), you know the one that says Hip-Hop Hooray…Oh…Ay…Oh”. Taking my shirt off and putting forth a futile attempt to stay in time with the music seemed to be the rallying cry the Sox needed to pull of their historic comeback. In the end it wasn’t enough, as the Sox lost a tough one this past Sunday night. You’ve got to give it to the Rays though. They played some great baseball throughout the regular and postseason.
I’ll guess the only positive thing about the Sox being eliminated way too early…a normal sleep schedule. Seems like these games started later and later each night even though most were at the peculiar 8:07 kickoff. I have to be to work at the grist mill by 7 a.m. so productivity was at an all time low for most of the past two weeks.
It’s much different to be defeated by this team than the Yankees, that is certain. The Yanks we are born to hate. The Rays, well they’re an upstart young ball club with a lot of energy to go with their raw talent. From a “root-for-the-little-guy” perspective this team is not unlike your New England Patriots of 2002. Read more
2008 MLB Playoffs Regular Season in Review
October 1, 2008
You really don’t appreciate the comfort of a bed until you’ve spent a week on the couch. You see that’s where I spent the bulk of my sleepy time since the release of my last article. Winter came early up on Bellevue Hill.
It brought be back to my days in college where I never got kicked off campus for a week and had to crash at a buddy’s “off campus” apartment. Think that’s bad my roommate never got kicked off twice. He must’ve thought it was a competition. If you have to inquire why either one of us got kicked off you must’ve been a commuter student.
Nevertheless the MLB playoffs are finally upon us. From my perspective it’s been an uncomfortable season for a Sox fan to say the least. I think Dice K’s season provides a suitable metaphor for the Sox in general. Watching Dice K pitch was like pulling teeth. He had you convinced that he was delivering another subpar performance yet he’d get the win pitching every batter to a full count and loading the bases every inning. At least that’s what it seemed like to me. Read more
