Forget the House, Let’s Talk Yards…Playoff Style!

Wow. I expected ALL of the rested home favorites to win last week, and although most of them did – - those blasted Chargers were thwarted by the lithe, tricky men in awful dark green. For the second week in a row, the Jets shocked the nation when they traveled to San Diego to take on the Chargers as 8.5-point underdogs and won outright 17-14. How do they keep beating superior teams? What is wrong with the Chargers to allow that kind of choke-dome to overcome them? Norv Turner is a wimp; San Diego should have gone for it a couple of times on 4th and short and instead they went and missed field goal opportunities. Phillip Rivers is a franchise quarterback. He is also incapable of utilizing the play clock productively and inept in come from behind situations. For crying out loud, this was a PLAYOFF game people! As long as conservative (being nice) Norv Turner is calling the shots, the Chargers will choke when it means the most…like last week. Read more

Wow. Last week’s Wild Card Playoff weekend had more shocks and surprises than I was expecting.
It all started with the Jets beating the Bengals in Cincy 24-14 and knocking me right out of the Sudden Death Playoff Pool I was in and am now no longer involved in. Darn Bengals, I should’ve picked the Cowboys.
Going into the game it was my impression, as well as most of the Sports advisors, that Sanchez was the weakest link. I was surprised that the Jets put Sanchez in the position to have to win the game with his arm and they didn’t rely solely on their run game and defense (like Coach Rex Ryan said they would). That Coach is tricky. He said Sanchez “wasn’t ready” to fling the ball around in the playoffs therefore it was to my amazement that Mark even threw the ball at all and then shock and surprise, Sanchez threw on three different 3rd and longs and connected on each one. The J-J-Jets seemed to have really been on their toes and Cincy was sluggish. New York won the game fair and square. And even though it was a defensive game and had the lowest total of all four games last weekend, it went over the posted 34-points. Ocho won’t be talking crap for at least another nine months after getting stuffed by the men in awful green and Cincy’s QB Carson Palmer most likely pulled an ostrich out and stuck his own head in the sand after hearing that he was Mark Sanchez’s boyhood idol – - now Sanchez has a playoff win under his belt and Palmer doesn’t. I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Years. As we say Too-Doo-Loo to 2009, we also end the NFL regular season and step into PLAYOFF MODE BABY!
Last week, there were three games where the opponents would be facing each other again this week in the Wildcard Week: Green Bay/Arizona, Cincinnati/Jets and Philly/Dallas.
Each team approached these games differently, some didn’t want to show their hand and give their opponent an extra week to study them so they rested some of their starters (Arizona). Some teams didn’t want to shut down for a week only to reboot the following week and chance the stutter it may cause (Green Bay). And some teams were just fighting for the chance to participate or increase their standings in the post-season (Jets/Dallas/Philly). Read more

Happy Holidays! I hope everyone is prepared because ready or not, here it is. Christmas is here. Yikes. Doesn’t it seem like it was just Thanksgiving yesterday? Time flies man, especially during football season.
We are entering week 16 of the regular season and will be saying goodbye to a slew of teams after week 17 as only the playoff teams will be partaking from January 3rd on. Another season is almost over…Sniff.
Last week the Patriots went to Buffalo and won 17-10. NE was leading 17-3 most of the game but with a few minutes left in the 4th quarter, Bill’s QB, Ryan Fitzpatrick tossed Lee Evans an 11-yard touchdown bringing Buffalo to within 7-points; AND Buffalo recovered the on-side kick only to give it up because of an offensive penalty. Bum luck for them, good lean our way. Read more

Last week, the home team won in Foxboro against Carolina 20-10, although it wasn’t pretty. The Panther’s QB, Jake Delhomme was out of the game with a broken finger and was replaced by Matt Moore who did a good job, or so it seemed; it is possible that it just looked that way because the Pats weren’t playing as well as usual. New England struggled with getting points on the board and a pair of fumbles and an interception didn’t help, but in the end they managed to get the job done. Tom Brady is a new daddy and although present, could be very tired.
Everyone keeps asking me “What’s going on with the Pats?” to which my standard response is “I don’t know.” Read more

Holy Cow. What is going on with the triple stunned New England Patriots? Last week, they traveled down to tropic Miami and blew another 4th quarter lead for the third time on the road and tragically lost to the Fish 22-21. Uhm. Wow. The only points scored in the fourth quarter were the 3-points by the Dolphins for the win even though the Pats had numerous opportunities. Tom Brady uncharacteristically threw two fourth quarter interceptions, one with ten minutes left and the other with a little over a minute remaining. I don’t know about you, but I expected the Patriot offense to take that minute to march down the field and clinch the win like usual. The Pats are unbalanced. Their Fen Shui is not straight. The defense is playing stinky which puts too much pressure on the offense hence everything is crooked on the road for the Pats these days. So much so that with a little less than four minutes left in the game, the Dolphins went for it on 4th and 6 and got it. QB Chris Henne hit WR Greg Camarillo for 13-yards which brought them to NE’s 28-yard line and set up the 41-yard winning field goal. Read more

Oh Boy. Last Monday Night was not so easy in the Big Easy. It was more like a Big Mess. The Pats lost to New Orleans 38-17. I now officially hate New Orleans. For me, this massive dislike did not just pop up last Tuesday morning, it started about a month ago while I was watching some talking head football show, and a quick interview with Drew Brees came on. I was not impressed. I found him to be arrogant and defensive with his snippy little answers and ever since I saw that interview, whenever I watch the Saint’s games, I notice little things that annoy me more about Brees (too much to write). Maybe it’s my imagination and last week’s loss just added fuel to the fire, but I doubt it. For the past month and a half, I’ve hoped TB, St. Louie, Carolina, Atlanta, Miami or the Giants would have knocked the Saints down a peg or two or five. After each week passed and the Saints kept securing wins, I figured my one true hope in seeing them beat was when the Patriots went to New Orleans to show the Saints what’s what. I guess that idea is out the window huh?
After the big L, some of the commentators were saying that the Pats were still stunned from the dramatic loss in Indy three weeks ago. What the ??? They weren’t stunned enough to roll over for the Jets…so what did they mean? A delayed stunned? What are they now? Double delayed stunned? Is that like double stuffed? The talking heads make no sense most of the time. There are trends and statistics that back up what is happening with the Patriots. Some good, some bad – - it is what it is. Read more

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and you all enjoyed your families, friends, lots of good food and a few decent football games. There were three games on the tube on Thanksgiving. The appetizer game was Green Bay at Detroit where the Pack just marched up and down the field like gold and green point makers for a total score of 34-12. The main course was Oakland at Dallas where the Boys shook off last week’s abysmal so-called game and beat the Raiders 24-7. And the sweet and tasty dessert was the Giants at Denver, where the Broncos prevailed 26-6 as home dogs and managed to finally break the miserable losing streak they had going.
If you were watching Thursday night’s game, you had to have seen Josh McDaniels addressing his team after four trips to the red zone resulted in three field goals and only one touchdown. If you didn’t see, try and imagine…..the commentators said something like “Coach McDaniels isn’t happy…” or whatever and then unbeknownst to Coach McDaniels, the cameras and mikes swiveled to the Denver bench and we saw and HEARD him FLIP OUT while using extremely colorful language. Josh was completely validated in his reaction, although I don’t think he will appreciate the LIVE coverage. I don’t know about you guys, but I was saying the same stuff to my TV and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the coach and I were on the same page. Then, the NFL Network realized what had happened and cut to a commercial, when they came back the commentators were like “Uhm, sorry about that, uhm earmuffs kids, earmuffs.” It was hysterical. It really helped lighten up the “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” feeling of frustration that a girl who loves points was beginning to experience. Read more

So, let’s take out the huge elephant in the room and discuss last week’s CALL to go for it on 4th and 2. And just so there’s no confusion, by discuss I mean I’ll talk and give you my opinions and judgments and you read.
First of all, Patriot fans everywhere have gotten accustomed to our team’s exceptionally high caliber of play. Therefore, when something negative happens, it is very difficult to swallow. In most instances, when our home team has a fourth and short; going for it is not unexpected nor is it a surprise. We anticipate the Pats will be able to gain a measly yard or two with ease and professionalism. So much so that when I watch other teams and they are in a fourth and short position, I often think “Why aren’t they going for it?” or “Oh Man! They should have gone for it!” However, despite my expertise opinion, exclamations and/or curses, many teams don’t take the chance despite their position on the field even in a low risk play. Going for it represents a nod of confidence from the coach directly to his offense, most notably his QB and is most definitely a gamble.
We, as Patriots fans, have taken for granted the gamble part and have solely focused on the confidence part. I can understand Belichick’s decision to take the gamble. This year’s Patriots team sports a superior offense compared to their defense. Period. Belichick decide to go with his strongest tools which is understandable after watching Peyton Manning march down the field in the fourth quarter during two separate drives, both 2 minutes or less, 5 and 6 plays respectively, and score touchdowns with ease. Last week there were a few upsets in NFL world; and I think the biggest one was Green Bay getting pummeled 38-28 by Tampa Bay in sunny FLA. Nobody could have seen that one coming! The Buccs have been limping along this season, losing every game; until they let 21-year old rookie QB, Josh Freeman, toss the ball around. Boy oh boy, what a changed team. The kid threw 14-31 for 205-yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Tampa Bay is psyched. Green Bay is bummed. Aaron Rodgers was sacked six times bringing Green Bay’s NFL-worst total to 37 sacks in eight games. Owie. Hang in there Aaron, things will get better.
Next up for the Pack, Dallas comes to town as 3-point favorites. Talk about adding insult to injury. I can understand the number since Green Bay has had an awful spiral of bad luck lately and the result is a 4-4 record. I don’t have to like it but I understand it. The Pack is now three games behind their hated rival Minnesota. Whereas, the Boys have four consecutive wins under their belt, and with last week’s 20-16 win in Philly, have catapulted themselves ahead of the Eagles by one game. All season long Dallas and Philly have been neck and neck in their division (NFC East). Philly will travel to San Diego this week as 1-point underdogs and if they manage to beat the Chargers, and Dallas manages to lose to Green Bay (hope – hope); then Philly and Dallas will be tied again. Dun Dun Duuuuun. Read more
