Review of Upper Crust West Roxbury
October 23, 2009
The Upper Crust Pizzeria is a notorious pizza-chain located throughout the Boston area and the Metro-West region with restaurants in Beacon Hill, Brookline, Newbury Street, the South End, Harvard Square, Newburyport, Hingham, Lexington, Waltham, Salem, Watertown, and now also West Roxbury.
Located on 1727 Centre Street in West Roxbury this Upper Crust Pizzeria keeps up the Upper Crust name offering guests the bar-like feel while enjoying fresh-pizza accompanied by a beer. The Upper Crust Pizzeria in West Roxbury also has four flat screen televisions mounted to the wall, showing local sports games and sport shows.
The restaurant itself is spacious with an ample dining area for guests to sit down at a booth or table. Each table has hand-picked flowers placed a small vase; the vase at our table was filled with sun flowers. Hanging from the ceiling are actual pizza pans, suspended by string- giving the restaurant a creative, modern look. Families, couples, and friends dressed in casual attire were both dining in at the Upper Crust Pizzeria in West Roxbury as well as picking up take-out.

Table Critic Reviews Grill 23
April 15, 2009
For more than 25 years, Grill 23, located at the corner of Berkeley and Stuart Streets in swanky Back Bay, has been a landmark destination for diners seeking Boston’s finest in steak, seafood and sensational service. The restaurant boasts dark wood paneling with gold accents, sculpted ceilings, decorative columns and a majestic winding staircase through the center of the space. Individual tables are topped with crisp white tablecloths, dinners sit at mahogany bars, and the second floor includes a lounge, a dine-in wine cellar and several private dining rooms. The restaurant expanded last year with a private dining suite that can accommodate anywhere from 10 to 135 guests, and also has audiovisual capabilities for those looking for a little business with their beef. Table Critic Review of MJ’s in Roslindale
March 27, 2009
MJ’s is a neighborhood sub and pizza joint, through and through. It’s not a place where one should go seeking the environs of more upscale, brick oven pizza restaurants, but that is as it should be in a place like this. It sits on a reasonably well trafficked corner of Belgrade Ave, less than a mile from Roslindale Square, in a densely populated working class neighborhood filled with small homes; the owner, Steve O’Malley, proudly caters to his neighbors, and the restaurant reflects that ethic. Though the small seating area is not fancy by any measure, the obvious rapport between Steve, his staff, and their loyal customers creates a friendly and inviting atmosphere.
As I arrived for a Saturday afternoon lunch, an older woman entered at the same time as I. Steve greeted her by name and noted that she had been a customer for years. We also encountered two teenage girls who addresses Steve as Mr. O’Malley, and a father with two young children, who also clearly knew Steve well. Eating in that kind of place, where the proprietor knows and cares about his neighborhood customer base, and where that affection is clearly shared by the clientele, is always a fun experience. Steve, who is a lifelong veteran of the Boston food industry and has been in this neighborhood for many years, clearly values being a neighborhood eatery. MJ’s is a very comfortable place to eat at any time, the kind of restaurant where you can feel good going right after a workout or for an early evening bite before going out. Read more
Tacos El Charro in Jamaica Plain
March 5, 2009
It was a rare Saturday night… we actually had a babysitter and they were FREE (as in — cost us nothing)! Good friends of ours were going out to dinner to celebrate a birthday and we were fortunate enough to not only be invited, but to also partake in their wonderful babysitters — Grandpa Grumpy and Bubby — the 4-yo’s best friend’s grandparents.
The birthday dinner was held at Tacos El Charro… a small, non-descript Mexican restaurant on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain’s Hyde Square. From the outside, Tacos El Charro looks a tiny bit sketchy… and on the inside, not much better. Read more

New American Cuisine in the Parkway Area – Food, Drinks & Comfort
November 7, 2008
My name is Manuel Sifnugel and I am the chef/owner of Masona Grill, a cozy and warm venue located at 4 Corey Street in West Roxbury. I enjoy being part of the Parkway community. I reside in Roslindale with my three daughters whose names I used to name the restaurant after: Ma Marcella So Sofia and Na Natalia.
Masona Grill is a family-run restaurant. It’s a hands-on operation where I guarantee satisfaction to every person that visits the restaurant. The cuisine is Classic New American, with a focus on seasonal, fresh herbs and spices. The autumn menu features Seared Sea Scallops, Sautéed Chicken Breast, Grilled Pork Chop and Sirloin Steak.
$12 Bistro specials are available from 5pm-630pm Monday through Sunday. Diners can choose such comfort dishes as Hand Roasted Turkey with mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce, Pumpkin Ravioli, Fish’n Chips with coleslaw, and Sautéed Shrimp served with linguini in a plum tomato sauce.
I hope to see you soon at Masona Grill to experience the food, the drinks and the atmosphere.
Goodnight Moon — At Bella Luna in JP
October 14, 2008
Last Tuesday night, my Husband and I had the distinct pleasure of attending “Goodnight Moon” – a themed press dinner celebrating the launch of the new Fall menu at Bella Luna restaurant in Jamaica Plain.
The (complimentary) event included music, food, cocktails and a media-only candlepin bowling competition — downstairs in the Milkyway Lounge afterwards. We had a great time!
It was a cocktail reception setting and the music was provided by DJ Ghostdad — a Boston DJ and mix-master of Crunk, Death Metal and Disco House.
The executive chef, Jacob Zachow, offered a sampling of many of the appetizers, entrees and desserts you can expect to see on their new fall menu starting now.
We met up with a fellow food blogger — Pam, of Cave Cibum, and started our evening with a few martinis. Read more
TableCritic Review of Townsend’s Restaurant
September 30, 2008
This year, Michael and Rosaleen Tallon, owners of Cambridge’s venerable Kendall Cafe, opened a spacious, comfortable restaurant in their hometown of Hyde Park, a place many Boston transplants could not locate on a map. Their decision was partly pragmatic: The Tallons, who hail from Ireland, were “tired of always having to get in the car to have a beer”, says Michael, tired of staying up till 3am at the cafe, tired of missing precious moments with their young son, Conor, who was born here in Hyde Park. But it’s also partly visionary: they’ve been watching other Boston musicians, artists and hipsters-turned-parents quietly relocate to this sleepy, unassuming town in recent years, and with housing costs rising, it’s only a matter of time before the urbanites of Boston discover this homey suburb. Word on the street is that the two theatres in the area are in the midst of being re-vitalized, and in the meantime, the Tallons plan to use their cooking and booking expertise to open TC’s Coffeehouse next door (set to open in a month or so), with morning lattes for the locals and evening entertainment for everyone who ventures out to 81 Fairmount Ave. Read more
We’ve been tightening our belts lately…
September 26, 2008
And therefore, haven’t eaten out in ages. So here I sit, pondering what to write about — when I don’t have any restaurant recommendations or food news to give you. I’m guessing we’re all in the a same boat… feeling the crunch of the current state of our economy and in response, keeping our meals closer to home. I’ve already written about various local food movements and resources… so what else is left?
Well, it’s cold and rainy outside… and the Fall fruit and vegetable crops have started to trickle in (pun intended). So how about some feel-good, comfort-food recipes to help warm the soul? I’m sure we could all use a little comforting… and what better way to do so, than by stuffing our faces with dishes that taste delicious?
I went to Allandale farm yesterday to scope out the seasonal goods — and picked up some locally grown apples, corn and figs. They also had an abundance of late summer squash, onions, eggplant and the last dwindling of tomatoes. If you’ve been to any grocery store this week, you know as I do that the pumpkins and large varieties of squash have hit the shelves as well.
So, with that in mind, here is some inspiration for you… the recipes that I am drooling over this month.
