Globe Article on Parkway Little League Drama
January 9, 2010
In what appears to be taking on a life of its own, today’s Boston Globe has a story on the drama that is going on with Parkway Little League. The focus of their story is that the League had been running for years using their own set of rules rather than abiding by Little League Rules and Regulations.
One of the biggest concerns was the use of a farm system – the practice of Major league teams protecting players so that they could call them up if needed or to protect them so that they can be on the Major league team the following year.
The following is a quote from Patrick Holden, assistant regional director of Little League’s Eastern Region in Bristol.
“They treated it like it was Major League Baseball,’’ Holden said. “Psychologically, what are you telling these kids? That’s definitely not within our guidelines.’’
Hopefully with this week’s election of a new Board Of Directors, the League can move forward, right any wrongs, and get the kids on the fields to play ball.

A cultural remix in West Roxbury Neighborhood keeps charm with influx of outsiders
For years, the new labels went to its neighbors.
Jamaica Plain was the spot for young hipsters seeking a tolerant environment. Roslindale was the ethnic melting pot with blue collar roots that young families could afford. But West Roxbury? West Roxbury was what it always had been, a suburban enclave in the city where lace-curtain Irish had settled and never left.
Where outsiders saw dull, residents saw continuity and comfort.
But as expensive real estate has forced a steady migration from Boston’s core, the diaspora has reached this outlier neighborhood, carrying with it couples like Drew Bartley and Chris Norris, formerly of the South End.
“On one of our first days in the neighborhood, our neighbor, who’s been here forever, walks up to us,” said Norris, an affordable housing advocate who scooped up a four-bedroom Victorian with his partner Bartley, a genealogist, on a block where the number of newcomers rivals that of old-timers. “And she says, ‘Welcome to the neighborhood. Boys, don’t you worry about a thing. My daughter is a lesbian.’ ” Read more
Burying the Lead (and Hatchet)
July 28, 2009
This is the first blog post from our newest contributor Matt O’Malley. Matt grew up in the Parkway, ran for public office, and remains very active in the community.
On Wednesday evening, President Obama held a prime time televised press conference in which he explained in great detail his sweeping (and innovative) health care plan as well as it’s ramifications on (and reflections of) the economy.
The President’s health care plan may represent the signature policy piece of his first term. Certainly, it will effect tens of millions of America. You would think that media coverage and public discourse would reflect the enormity of this ambitious proposal.
You would be wrong.
Locally and nationally coverage of the press conference seemed to solely concern President Obama’s off-hand remark that the Cambridge police “acted stupidly” in arresting Harvard Prof. Henry Gates in his home earlier this week. Read more

Ohrenberger Pre-School Program Saved for One More Year
April 30, 2009
The City of Boston changed it’s deadline for the closing of the pre-school program at the Ohrenberger School. The Boston Centers for Youth and Families were set to cut pre-school and after school programs next year in an attempt to save money at 10 of their facilities. The parents at the Ohrenbereger school banded together and fought passionately for their children and for the fate of the dedicated staff.
Late Monday night, word came from Mayor Menino’s office saying that the pre-school program has been saved for the 2009 – 2010 school year.
