CM’s “3 Point Show” Leads to 84-79 Upset Victory Over #3 St John’s Prep.
February 3, 2010
Last night, the boys from Catholic Memorial put on a 3 point clinic in Danvers, as they went on to come from behind and beat the previously undefeated St John’s Prep (15-1). With CM getting thier 6th straight victory, winning 84 to 79, they are now tied with Prep in the Catholic Conference.
Behind the leadership of Senior Dan Brooks (27 points) and Sophomore Dan Powers (18 points), the Knights were able to chip thier way back from deficits that were as many as 18.
The game looked as though it was going to be a blow out by CM, as they took and early lead, but Prep, behind Coach Sean Connolly, took a lead that they held until 3 minutes left in the 4th Quarter.
It was the defensive pressure of CM that allowed them to stay in the game in the 2nd Half, but it was the 3 point exhibition that won it for them. CM scored 14 three point field goals on the game, with 10 coming in the second half. At one point it looked as though anything CM threw up was a 3, and Prep seemed to not be getting the bounces on the rim, that they were getting most of the night.
St John’s will face Xaverian next and CM will tip off against rival Boston College High School here in West Roxbury Friday February 5 at 7pm. Read more
Chiasson Goal Puts BU Back in Beanpot Final
February 2, 2010
BOSTON (Feb. 1) — When the final buzzer sounded at the TD Garden to end the nightcap at the 58th annual Beanpot, there were still 66 minutes before Groundhog Day began.
Unless, of course, you’re with the Northeastern Huskies.
Beanpot king Boston University used an Alex Chiasson goal with 5:47 remaining in regulation to break a 1-1 tie as the Terriers knocked off the Huskies, 2-1, to advance to the Beanpot championship game for the 42nd time in the last 48 years.
The loss for Northeastern continued its Beanpot futility against the Terriers. The Huskies have not won a Beanpot title since 1988, have not beaten BU in the tournament since 1985 and have not won a semifinal gave versus Terriers since 1983. Read more

Congratulations to the CM soccer team, who won the MIAA Division I State Championship on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Western Mass champion Ludlow.
In leading the Knights through an impeccable six-game postseason win-streak, Coach John Finn ’89 earned his school’s first state championship in his fifth season as head coach.
A solid all-around team, the Knights let in only one goal during regulation in the entire tournament. They fought against elimination in five sudden-death overtime periods and one penalty-kick showdown.

CM’S Harney Wins State Golf Championship
November 8, 2009
West Roxbury native and Catholic Memorial School senior Joe Harney ’10 won the Division II state championship golf title on November 3 at Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton. Harney defeated a field of contenders from all over Massachusetts, winning with a score of par–72–on the challenging Blackstone course.
Harney, who is captain of the CM golf team and who has played varsity golf in all four of his years as a Knight, had captured the Catholic Conference title back on October 17 at Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover. On that day, Harney shot a league-low 77 on the 72-par course.
A nationally-ranked player, Harney earned the golf team’s MVP award last year, when he won the Catholic Conference title as well. Over the summer, he competed in tournaments throughout New England.
In his four seasons, Harney has consistently been a contender in the Conference, according to his coach, John Palermo. Finishing with the first state title for CM in as long as Coach Palermo could remember was “a great way to finish it,” said Palermo.
“This was an outstanding effort for Joe, that caps off four great years of play,” he added.

Sonia’s Run Saturday September 19th
September 8, 2009
In the mid-1990s, 18-year old Sonia Belcher (then, Sonia Daly) was intent on creating a school where Orthodox Christian children in the Boston area would benefit from a strong academic and spiritual education founded in the teachings of the Orthodox Christian Church. In 1997, with the support of the local Orthodox Christian community, Sonia founded what is believed to be the first pan-Orthodox School in the country: the Theophany School in Needham, MA. That fall, 17 children were enrolled for the 1997-1998 school year. Today, Theophany School is thriving, with some 35 students enrolled in the School’s Pre-School and Kindergarten classes. With three full-time teachers and one director on staff, students are provided with the individualized care and attention that is vital to a young child’s learning. Theophany School continues to grow, thanks to the generous support of the community.
Sadly, in February, 2008 Sonia Belcher passed away suddenly on her 32nd birthday. She was survived by her husband, Deacon Nicholas Belcher and their three-month old son, Andrew. In addition to her beloved family, Sonia left behind a legacy of tenacity and determination. Her final wish was for Theophany School to function as a full elementary school. Shortly after her untimely death, the School launched its “Building on a Dream” campaign, an initiative to continue Sonia’s mission, while keeping her memory alive. Thanks to the campaign, the School has received overwhelming support over the last year. Read more
