The Yard House at Legacy Place in Dedham
July 29, 2010
Last Friday night, we felt like grabbing a bite out with the 5-yo. I wanted to sit outside, so this limited our choices significantly. We opted to head over to Legacy Place in Dedam, because there are five different outdoor dining options there.
We wanted something the 5-yo would eat and didn’t want to wait for a table long, so we decided to try the Yard House, a chain restaurant known for having a very large number of beers on draft. I figured this place would have plenty of tables available. We immediately realized it would be too hot to eat outside anyway, as their patio faces the setting sun, so we figured we’d just sit inside. Read more
BFW Review of Fresh Catch in West Roxbury
July 7, 2010
About two years ago, a new takeout seafood place opened up on Centre Street in West Roxbury… Fresh Catch To Go. I wondered how they would do, as the location has limited parking and they are strictly takeout. Also, they joined the restaurant business just as the economy tanked. But two years later, and they are still there and seem to be doing okay.
I have no idea why (as I LOVE seafood), but I never got to Fresh Catch until about 3 weeks ago. The place where I get my pedicures is right next door, but the restaurant’s hours are a bit limited (closed on Sun/Mon, 4-9pm on Tue/Sat and 11am-pm on Wed/Fri)… so I guess it just never worked out for me until now.
I went in (of course), after a pedicure. It was early… about 11:30am, so it was quiet (no other customers). I knew what I wanted., so I ordered immediately… my summer addiction: a Lobster Roll. Read more

Want Modern Japanese Cuisine? Try Haru in Boston
April 16, 2010
HARU, Boston
Atmosphere: Interested in visiting Japan-where the famous Cherry Blossom Festival is taking place now-but can’t spring for the ticket? If it’s modern Japanese cuisine your palate seeks, a trip to Haru at the Prudential Center is in order.
Haru is a restaurant, sushi bar and bar located on the street level of one of Boston’s grandest structures. A New York transplant, it’s sleek, trendy and decorated according to the principles of beauty and simplicity that define Japanese aesthetics. Enter the restaurant on Huntington Avenue via a striking, temple-like portal. Inside, relax and appreciate the mellifluous lines, mint-green walls, earthy bamboo floors, tranquil aquamarine lighting, ethereal bubble-like fixtures, graceful stone sculptures, rock gardens, lush green ferns and cherry blossom-studded silk kimonos (see, there are your cherry blossoms!). At the sushi bar, chefs slice slivers of fresh fish and roll their creations in rice, while diners linger over chic cocktails and maki rolls in the main dining area. It’s a serene yet hip setting, and our waiter, Michael, was very personable and provided excellent suggestions on the menu. Read more
Raffi Yessayan’s “2 IN THE HAT” Debut’s Today!
April 16, 2010
***AT BORDERS IN BRAINTREE TONIGHT Friday, April 16 at 7 p.m.***
Author Raffi Yessayan of West Roxbury, is no stranger to Boston’s crime scene. Formerly the chief prosecutor of the elite Gang Unit in Boston’s Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, now privately practicing criminal defense, Yessayan has real-world knowledge of both the criminal mind and the law. Drawing on years of experience, Yessayan renders a stark, gripping portrait of law enforcement professionals on the job and under the gun. Following up his acclaimed debut, 8 in the Box, Yessayan invokes cop slang for “two shots to the head” for the title of his second gritty crime novel, 2 IN THE HAT (Ballantine Books Hardcover; April 13, 2010).
A major spike in gang homicides has Boston on edge, leaving a growing body count of bangers in its wake and the city’s police and DA’s office scrambling to catch up. Even the mayor’s Street Saviors taskforce of ex-cons, devoted to steering kids out of the thug life, are working overtime to stop the bloodshed. But who will stop the even greater threat that’s about to descend when a murderous psychopath steps out of the past? Read more
Local Business “Legends” to be “Roasted” for Charity
April 13, 2010
On Friday, April 30th, the West Roxbury/Roslindale Rotary Club will be hosting its primary annual fundraiser at the West Roxbury Elks Club from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Long-time business “legends” John Sullivan and Steve Slyne will receive the Paul Harris Award, (Rotary’s highest honor, named after its founder), for decades of community service to the Parkway area. Recent recipients of this award include Mayor Thomas Menino and Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley.
In the past, this event has been a relatively formal affair, complete with dry political speeches and standard photo opportunities. Not this year! Boston City Councilor John Tobin has agreed to MC a full fledged “comedy roast” of Slyne and Sullivan—two men who, in addition to their community involvement, are well known for having great senses of humor. (They’ll need it–professional and amateur comedians intend to have a good natured “field day” on these gentlemen!)
Music will be provided by Boston Entertainment Company and dinner has been graciously donated by several local restaurants, including West on Centre, Masona Grille, Corrib Pub, Birch Street Bistro and MJ’s Subs and Pizza. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $25 or in advance at LaRosa Real Estate (Spring St.–WR), The Cooperative Bank (WR/Roslindale branches), Brookline Bank (WR) and Parkway Printing (WR).
This promises to be a lot of fun. Dinner and a show for $25! Please stop by, bring a friend and enjoy a great night out to benefit local Rotary charities!
