Want Modern Japanese Cuisine? Try Haru in Boston
April 16, 2010
HARU, Boston
Atmosphere: Interested in visiting Japan-where the famous Cherry Blossom Festival is taking place now-but can’t spring for the ticket? If it’s modern Japanese cuisine your palate seeks, a trip to Haru at the Prudential Center is in order.
Haru is a restaurant, sushi bar and bar located on the street level of one of Boston’s grandest structures. A New York transplant, it’s sleek, trendy and decorated according to the principles of beauty and simplicity that define Japanese aesthetics. Enter the restaurant on Huntington Avenue via a striking, temple-like portal. Inside, relax and appreciate the mellifluous lines, mint-green walls, earthy bamboo floors, tranquil aquamarine lighting, ethereal bubble-like fixtures, graceful stone sculptures, rock gardens, lush green ferns and cherry blossom-studded silk kimonos (see, there are your cherry blossoms!). At the sushi bar, chefs slice slivers of fresh fish and roll their creations in rice, while diners linger over chic cocktails and maki rolls in the main dining area. It’s a serene yet hip setting, and our waiter, Michael, was very personable and provided excellent suggestions on the menu. Read more

Pleasant Cafe Review!
November 6, 2009
Pleasant Cafe has been making pizzas in Roslindale since the 1940′s, using only the freshest ingredients and their own original recipes. All of the dough and sauces are made from scratch in-house, daily and, in order to create their delicious signature thin crust pizzas, they begin by hand rolling their dough. This is then topped with their original sauce, their three-cheese blend and whatever toppings the customer may fancy, and cooked in a big brick oven. Of course dinner isn’t complete without a signature cocktail – and they serve them all, from gimlets to cosmopolitans. Read more
Review of Upper Crust West Roxbury
October 23, 2009
The Upper Crust Pizzeria is a notorious pizza-chain located throughout the Boston area and the Metro-West region with restaurants in Beacon Hill, Brookline, Newbury Street, the South End, Harvard Square, Newburyport, Hingham, Lexington, Waltham, Salem, Watertown, and now also West Roxbury.
Located on 1727 Centre Street in West Roxbury this Upper Crust Pizzeria keeps up the Upper Crust name offering guests the bar-like feel while enjoying fresh-pizza accompanied by a beer. The Upper Crust Pizzeria in West Roxbury also has four flat screen televisions mounted to the wall, showing local sports games and sport shows.
The restaurant itself is spacious with an ample dining area for guests to sit down at a booth or table. Each table has hand-picked flowers placed a small vase; the vase at our table was filled with sun flowers. Hanging from the ceiling are actual pizza pans, suspended by string- giving the restaurant a creative, modern look. Families, couples, and friends dressed in casual attire were both dining in at the Upper Crust Pizzeria in West Roxbury as well as picking up take-out.

Table Critic Reviews Grill 23
April 15, 2009
For more than 25 years, Grill 23, located at the corner of Berkeley and Stuart Streets in swanky Back Bay, has been a landmark destination for diners seeking Boston’s finest in steak, seafood and sensational service. The restaurant boasts dark wood paneling with gold accents, sculpted ceilings, decorative columns and a majestic winding staircase through the center of the space. Individual tables are topped with crisp white tablecloths, dinners sit at mahogany bars, and the second floor includes a lounge, a dine-in wine cellar and several private dining rooms. The restaurant expanded last year with a private dining suite that can accommodate anywhere from 10 to 135 guests, and also has audiovisual capabilities for those looking for a little business with their beef. Table Critic Review of MJ’s in Roslindale
March 27, 2009
MJ’s is a neighborhood sub and pizza joint, through and through. It’s not a place where one should go seeking the environs of more upscale, brick oven pizza restaurants, but that is as it should be in a place like this. It sits on a reasonably well trafficked corner of Belgrade Ave, less than a mile from Roslindale Square, in a densely populated working class neighborhood filled with small homes; the owner, Steve O’Malley, proudly caters to his neighbors, and the restaurant reflects that ethic. Though the small seating area is not fancy by any measure, the obvious rapport between Steve, his staff, and their loyal customers creates a friendly and inviting atmosphere.
As I arrived for a Saturday afternoon lunch, an older woman entered at the same time as I. Steve greeted her by name and noted that she had been a customer for years. We also encountered two teenage girls who addresses Steve as Mr. O’Malley, and a father with two young children, who also clearly knew Steve well. Eating in that kind of place, where the proprietor knows and cares about his neighborhood customer base, and where that affection is clearly shared by the clientele, is always a fun experience. Steve, who is a lifelong veteran of the Boston food industry and has been in this neighborhood for many years, clearly values being a neighborhood eatery. MJ’s is a very comfortable place to eat at any time, the kind of restaurant where you can feel good going right after a workout or for an early evening bite before going out. Read more

TableCritic Reviews The Halfway Cafe
November 12, 2008
Atmosphere: The next time you’ve got a hankering for wings and beer but your dining companion insists on cocktails and steak tips, the appropriate response might be,”Let’s meet Halfway” — at the Halfway Cafe, that is. With locations in Dedham, Watertown, Marlborough, Canton, Holbrook and Marshfield, meeting halfway – both in dining preferences and location – is a simple preposition.
The Halfway Cafe was founded in 1964; the original owner sold it in 1978; it went through multiple owners before longtime friends and colleagues John Grasso and David Steen purchased the space in 1990. Over the past two decades, the partners expanded from the original Dedham location to the current six locations, including the Marshfield location, which has been open just seven months. Steen passed away in 2006, but Grasso remains at the helm, committed as ever to providing what the restaurant’s entrance sign promises: “Good food cheap.” Read more
