One positive pool was found in North Dorchester and the other in Hyde Park for the first time this season. Previously, infected mosquitoes have been detected in North Dorchester and West Roxbury. Multiple positive mosquito pools suggest that WNV is likely to be present throughout the city. There has been one human case of WNV in Boston – a 46-year-old Boston woman whose case was confirmed Aug. 27. She has since recovered.

Since June, larvicide has been placed into city catch basins designed to reduce the number of mosquitoes in the city. Spraying has been done for mosquito nuisance control in parts of some neighborhoods, but there are currently no plans to expand spraying throughout the city.

WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito infected with the virus, said Dr. Anita Barry, director of the Infectious Disease Bureau at the Public Health Commission. She said it is very important for people to take precautions to reduce the risk of being bitten by an infected mosquito. She urges that they take a few simple steps that include:

· Use insect repellant when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are more likely to be biting and, when possible, wear clothing with long sleeves and pants.
· Mosquito-proof your home by making sure that window and door screens are in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from getting into your house.
· Prevent mosquitoes from breeding by turning over unused flower pots, buckets, wheelbarrows, and garbage cans; removing leaves and other debris that can clog gutters and trap water; disposing of or covering old tires; and covering swimming pools and kiddie pools when not in use.

For more information on WNV, call the Boston Public Health Commission at 617-534-5611 begin_of_the_skype_highlig or visit www.bphc.org.

Ed Coppinger, Candidate for State Representative in the 10th Suffolk District, today unveiled his 10 Priorities for the 10th District. Ed’s priorities are reflective of the countless conversations he has had with residents across the district.

“For the last few months, I have spent a lot of time carefully listening to the residents of West Roxbury, Roslindale and Brookline,” said Coppinger. “I did not come up with these priorities – the residents of the 10th Suffolk District did and I am committed to taking their priorities to the State House as their next State Representative.”

Coppinger, a father of four and a local businessman who has spent his professional career in the private sector, has created a platform that places special emphasis on putting Massachusetts residents back to work, supporting small businesses and a renewed investment in education. More specifically, his outline includes the following priorities he will tackle as State Representative:

Support the growth of small businesses and improve residents’ access to job training programs

Invest in green technologies including sensor technology in every state-owned building in order to be more efficient, create jobs and save taxpayers money

Prioritize funding for infrastructure projects that will create the most jobs and create on-the-job training for Massachusetts workers

Strengthen local business districts so that our neighborhoods continue to thrive

Promote fiscal responsibility by reducing wasteful government spending on Beacon Hill and doing more with less

Create innovative programs that make government departments more efficient, effective and open

Improve educational opportunities for all students by reducing class sizes, expanding after school programs and adopting inclusive learning models for our students with special needs

Restrict the influence of lobbyists on Beacon Hill by imposing contribution limits for corporations donating to politicians

Maximize partnerships between area leaders by proposing monthly meetings with my colleagues in federal, state and city government so that we can tackle district challenges together

Ensuring senior citizens get the tax relief they deserve so they can stay in their homes

“As a husband and father with school-aged children, as well as a homeowner and local businessman who has spent my professional life in the private sector, I understand firsthand the challenges our residents are experiencing,” concluded Coppinger. “My priorities as State Representative will be guided by the shared concerns of our residents, and I will go to work every day committed to delivering results and advocating for our district. I am ready to get to work.”

After a very successful 2010 season at all divisions, it is time to look ahead to next year. The Bandits will be holding try-outs for the 2011 season over the weekend of September 11-12.

The Bandits field teams in the U10, U12, U14 and U16 age divisions that play in 4-6 highly competitive tournaments throughout New England over the course of the summer. Depending upon the number of qualified interested players and coaches, a second team may be added to any of the age divisions. Bandits players must be prepared to commit a great deal of time and effort so the teams can be successful. Lack of commitment on behalf of a player will directly impact the player’s playing time and development.

Join us for this tale of young love, magical sprites and merry wanderers of the night, an innovative classic version of Shakespeare’s best loved comic masterpiece. As the height of summer comes to a close and before fall shows its autumnal bloom, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays, comes to Roxbury Latin this August. In a world of lovers, royalty, sprites, faeries, goblins, elves and shambolic actors, a magical romantic comedy will unfold before your eyes within the walls of Roxbury Latin’s Smith Theater.

Roxbury Latin Summer Theater is a new and exciting professional theater project sponsored by The Roxbury Latin School. For our inaugural production, we offer an entertaining, imaginative, classically bold interpretation of this colorful masterpiece. It will be a production that promises to delight and enthrall audiences of all ages, and theatrical experiences.

Roxbury Latin Summer Theater is a combination of professional theater practitioners, students and faculty members of Roxbury Latin. Director Ross MacDonald has gathered together some of Boston’s best young actors, including Liz Rimar as Titania and Jack Cutmore Scott as Lysander will shortly be starring in the Lyric Stage Company of Boston’s fall epic, ‘Nicholas Nickleby,’ playing the siblings Kate and Nick Nickleby. Curt Klump as Oberon is a favorite at some of Boston’s popular theater companies.

Performances will be August 26th through the 29th, Thursday night at 7.30 pm, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, and Sunday at 5pm. People under the age of 16 and over the age of 60 will pay $10 a ticket, and those between 16-60 will pay $15. Concessions are also available to veterans. We will be hosting acting workshops on August 28th and August 29th.

Contact us at summer.theater@roxburylatin.org for more details or call 617-325-4920 ext. 383.

Bethany Castellano, Ashleigh Primack and Mari Ross, cheerleaders at Boston Latin School, have been selected to be among more than 1,000 high school cheerleaders from across the U.S. who will be performing in the world famous London New Year’s Day Parade.

The BLS students qualified for the trip after being selected as an “All American” by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA). All Americans are selected to try out based on superior cheerleading skills at camps across the country. Approximately only 10% of the cheerleaders who attend UCA summer camps earn the chance to march in the holiday spectacular.

The girls, along with their coach, Shana Melcher need to raise $10,580.00 to fund the trip. All donations and/or sponsorships would be welcomed and greatly appreciated. You can give your donation to any member, or stop by any Citizens Bank, and tell them you’d like to support THE Friends OF LONDON ALL AMERICAN TOUR. You can also drop a check in the mail to Citizen’s Bank, 1999 Centre St. West Roxbury, MA 02132. Any amount would be greatly appreciated!! For further information email Mrs. Castellano at vhcaste@aol.com.
