Local Author Sells Out Borders

On Thursday night June 26, West Roxbury native, Raffi Yessayan made his splash in the world of suspense novels with his debut of “Eight in the Box”. The event started with a Q and A at 7pm and by 7:30pm, the entire stock of roughly 300 copies were snatched off of the shelves of the Borders Bookstore in Braintree where Raffi held his first book signing. The line for autographed copies snaked throughout the store and people waited hours in line to greet the former Suffolk County ADA.
Raffi’s novel is in the tradition of David Patterson with the local flavor of Dennis Lehane. This dark murder mystery has the reader on edge throughout. It is a definite page turner and ideal for summer reading with it’s short chapter format. Read more

We’ve already made it through our first heat wave. The three-days-of-ninety-degree-heat litmus test was passed last week. If you’re like me you have a love-hate with this warm weather. Last week you may have been compelled to complain about how hot it was, yet it should only take a few thoughts of this past winter to keep your complaints to yourself.
One advantage to the early heat was that it prompted me to get the air conditioners in. I had the foresight to install them before the real heat began. Previous years I was a knee jerk all-star, installing the A/C’s at high noon in a ninety five degree broil.
We are lucky as Bostonians to have many options to help us get through these “Dog Days of Summer”. I wonder who coined that term and if this person gets a royalty check every time one our news stations uses it. Read more

Let me just tell you that Roxie loves I Scream Works. What a great addition to Centre Street and the Parkway and a great family outing There’s nothing like a little Brigham’s mocha chip and a raspberry lime rickey.
On Tuesday night Roxie was invited to the Troop 7 merit badge ceremony. These young men are very impressive. They work hard to contribute and give back to our community. Roxie had the opportunity to speak with Daniel Gibson and Brendan Hanrahan. Daniel Gibson has recently become an Eagle Scout and will be heading to Iona College in the fall. Brendan Hanrahan is working on his Eagle Scout project. He will be a senior at Roxbury Latin in the fall. Stay tuned for more information about Brendan’s eagle project.
On Thursday evening at Barnes and Noble in Braintree at 7:00pm, West Roxbury’s own Raffi Yessayan will be signing copies of his recently published thriller “Eight in the Box.” Roxie ran right over to Barnes and Noble in Chestnut Hill and got a copy. So far so good….I doubt Roxie will be getting any sleep tonight!
Also on Thursday night, the Highland Civic Association is holding its spring meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:00pm at the West Roxbury Branch Library. Special guest speakers include Lauren Ockene, Founder of Grassroots Organization JP Trees and George Philippedes, MD
Beantown Barracudas PGSL U-10 Champions

This past Saturday and Sunday was Championship Weekend for the Parkway Girls Softball League. The U-10 Championship series was a great match-up between the first and second place teams in the league, the Beantown Barracudas and the Red Hot Chili Puppies.
The Barracudas produced the most runs on offense during the season and the Chili Puppies gave up the least runs. This was a clash between a potent offense and the division’s hardest throwing pitcher.
However, the series turned into a defensive chess match. Both teams worked the count on offense and mustered many ground balls. The games were decided by the plays made in the field. When mistakes were made in the field the opposing team took advantage.
The League Champion would have to win 2 games out of 3. The Barracudas won the first of two games of the series, 7-4 and 7-1.

There are still spots available on teams. All of the games are played at the Roche Community Center.

Public Health Commission Reports Two Cases of Salmonella Saintpaul

The Boston Public Health Commission today announced that two cases of Salmonella Saintpaul have been confirmed in Bostonresidents. This is the same strain that has been associated with the recent nationwide outbreak associated with tomatoes. The Commission is continuing to investigate. Both cases are recovering at this time.
These are the first reported cases of Salmonella Saintpaul in Boston this year.
In response to an outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul nationwide, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a health advisory recommending that consumers should not eat, and retailers should not sell, raw red
Roma, raw red plum, raw red round tomatoes, or products that contain these types of raw red tomatoes unless they are sure of the source of those tomatoes. Not all tomatoes are affected by this outbreak – only certain tomatoes from certain states. A list of states affected by the outbreak can be found at the Commission’s website, www.bphc.org, and at the FDA website, www.fda.org along with a list of locations where tomatoes not affected by the outbreak are grown and harvested. Celtics Win! Celtics Win! Yes the title of this Billy Joel classic, “This it the Time”, is quite apropos.
Although when I hear this song, triumphant victory by Boston sports teams is not the first thought that comes to mind. It’s actually pegged pants, the distinct aroma of Drakkar Noir and awkward slow dancing from high school dances a decade or two ago.
Regardless, there is no better time to be a Boston sports fan. I wrote about this on Patriots day thinking there couldn’t be a better time. The Celtics were playing great, the Sox were on a tear, the Bruins were putting up an honorable fight and we were hosting only the most famous marathon in the world. What could make that any better? A championship could, that’s what. Read more
