Vandalism at Hynes Field & Minors Arrested at Fallon Field

August 29, 2008

On Monday August 25th 2008 officers from area E-5 responded to Hynes Field at 520 VFW PKWY for a report of vandalism. On arrival officers spoke to the Superintended of Parks Mr. Charlie Rideout and Mr. Leif Fixen, also of the parks dept. Sometime between Sunday August 24th at 9:00 pm and Monday August 25th at 5:00am, unknown persons cut down 10 trees (7 Red Maple and 3 Honey Locust), damaged a park sign, and damaged a park bench. Officers and detectives observed the trees, which had been moved prior to arrival. The trees were initially located inside the playground area arranged in such a manner as to camouflage any activity going on in the playground. Several beer cans were recovered as well as items of clothing. A handsaw was also recovered in the woods behind the damaged park bench. Park workers recovered a small bag with various sex devices and condoms inside. The scene was photographed and processed by District Detectives.

The Boston Police Department of Area 5 is outraged and sympathizes with the residents in the West Roxbury community. Hynes Filed was just recently renovated and with the addition of the sprinklers it has become a place for families to come and spend summer days with their children. It is appalling that individuals would have such lack of respect for not only the area in which they live, but also those who find joy in using Hynes Field; particularly the young children. According to the Boston Globe, Friday’s (August 29) cookout at the West Roxbury Firehouse has been CANCELED by the Fire Commissioner.  The event had been planned as a way for the Firefighters to thank the community for their support during last years tragic fire that claimed the lives of firefighters Paul Cahill and Warren Payne.  A small dedication ceremony was also planned to coincide with the cookout.  According to the Globe the dedication ceremony will take place but there will be no cookout!  Click here for the story on Boston.com and let us know what you think.

TableCritic Visits Comella’s West Roxbury

August 25, 2008

Atmosphere:

Falling somewhere between a restaurant and an upscale take-out place, Comella’s of West Roxbury certainly fills a niche for today’s busy yet conscientious diner. Its long menu of homemade pastas, sauces, and traditional Italian entrees are all made from the freshest ingredients; and while you place your order at a counter off of a chalkboard menu (a limited selection of beer and wine is offered), your food is prepared quickly and dropped off at your table by a friendly server. Too busy to come in and eat? Then simply order take-out, or better yet, browse through the numerous options of convenient frozen take-away pastas and sauces and have your meal at home.

But the atmosphere of Comella’s is welcoming and family-friendly: sparsely decorated in comparison with most Italian restaurants, it achieves a clean, modern feel without being stark or cold. Nine tables are nestled under a classic molded tin ceiling and smart-looking ceiling fans, and a battery of San Pellegrino bottles line the front window facing onto Centre Street. Read more

Olympics Poll

August 18, 2008

As you may have noticed, the 2008 Olympics seem to be all the talk around town.  I was out and about last Wednesday and I heard several people talking about the Red Sox game and how they missed them blow a 10-0 1st inning lead.  Most of the conversations went like this:

“Hey did you see the Sox game last night?”

“Yeah, well the beginning anyway, but I missed the rest of it because I wanted to watch Michael Phelps swim.  He is amazing.”

Isn’t this Red Sox nation?

Don’t get me wrong, I am just as guilty as anyone else when it comes to the “Games”.  But the Red Sox of late do not help matters either, and football is around the corner but…Kevin O’Connell at quarterback just isn’t doing it for me.

Let me know what you are watching.  Take this weeks Olympics poll and tell us your favorites, choose the 2 you like most.  Let us know if we missed your favorite sport too.

iScream Works Hosts Field Trip

August 14, 2008

The West Roxbury Community Center’s Summer Fun Camp took their field trip last week to iScream Works on Centre Street.  The 30 campers and 20 counselors were graciously treated to ice cream, coloring books and coupons.  The Iscream Works staff was wonderful and the venue was kid friendly.

BFW

August 13, 2008

Busy Fricken Week. Oh, I mean Boston Food & Whine.

In either case, I’ve not been a good blogger this week. I’ve neglected my personal blog, I’ve neglected Parkway Boston and I’ve neglected my friend’s blogs. This time of year is a challenge… between vacations, obligations and trying to enjoy the summer (while it lasts), it’s hard to keep up with my writing and my “personal ventures”. My intentions are good, but my time is limited.

This week is actually worst than most. It’s Restaurant Week, which has me out and about on both Wednesday and Friday night and I leave for a two-week vacation to Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday (yay! but that means this week at work SUCKS too). Unfortunately, it also means I will be out of commission for two weeks… as the house we are renting does not have Internet access. Mindblowing, but true. Read more
