Little League Field Vandalized
September 30, 2008
The Guy Cammarata Little League Complex on Baker St in West Roxbury, had one of it’s fields vandalized last week by what is believed to be kids drinking. McDonough Field was found to have empty beer cans in one of the dugouts and some of the new grass was ripped up.
McDonough Field, used mainly for Instructional League and TBall players (ages 4 – 8), is currently in the process of being renovated for the Spring of 2009. The vandals not only littered the field with empty beer cans, they also ripped up some of the new sod that has been planted. Read more
TableCritic Review of Townsend’s Restaurant
September 30, 2008
This year, Michael and Rosaleen Tallon, owners of Cambridge’s venerable Kendall Cafe, opened a spacious, comfortable restaurant in their hometown of Hyde Park, a place many Boston transplants could not locate on a map. Their decision was partly pragmatic: The Tallons, who hail from Ireland, were “tired of always having to get in the car to have a beer”, says Michael, tired of staying up till 3am at the cafe, tired of missing precious moments with their young son, Conor, who was born here in Hyde Park. But it’s also partly visionary: they’ve been watching other Boston musicians, artists and hipsters-turned-parents quietly relocate to this sleepy, unassuming town in recent years, and with housing costs rising, it’s only a matter of time before the urbanites of Boston discover this homey suburb. Word on the street is that the two theatres in the area are in the midst of being re-vitalized, and in the meantime, the Tallons plan to use their cooking and booking expertise to open TC’s Coffeehouse next door (set to open in a month or so), with morning lattes for the locals and evening entertainment for everyone who ventures out to 81 Fairmount Ave. Read more
Dow Jones Closes Down 777.68 Points
September 29, 2008
The Dow Jones fell 777.68 points in Monday trading, set off by panic from the House rejection of the $700 Billion bailout sent to the House by the Senate! Today’s drop is the single largest point drop in US history as the market lost almost 7% of it’s value.
What does this mean for you? What does this mean for the economy in general? What are you doing on Main Street to deflect the damage on Wall Street? Let us know!

TDINI Night At The Corrib Another Success For WRMS
September 29, 2008
Once again the Corrib and Tom Dougherty stepped up to the plate to support West Roxbury Main Streets. Tom poured and all his tips went to support Main Streets. Approximately $1,000 was raised.
Local legend Steve Slyne helped to facilitate one of his trademark raffles and West Roxbury “ROX” tee shirts were available for purchase. Every table was full and the atmosphere was festive.
We’ve been tightening our belts lately…
September 26, 2008
And therefore, haven’t eaten out in ages. So here I sit, pondering what to write about — when I don’t have any restaurant recommendations or food news to give you. I’m guessing we’re all in the a same boat… feeling the crunch of the current state of our economy and in response, keeping our meals closer to home. I’ve already written about various local food movements and resources… so what else is left?
Well, it’s cold and rainy outside… and the Fall fruit and vegetable crops have started to trickle in (pun intended). So how about some feel-good, comfort-food recipes to help warm the soul? I’m sure we could all use a little comforting… and what better way to do so, than by stuffing our faces with dishes that taste delicious?
I went to Allandale farm yesterday to scope out the seasonal goods — and picked up some locally grown apples, corn and figs. They also had an abundance of late summer squash, onions, eggplant and the last dwindling of tomatoes. If you’ve been to any grocery store this week, you know as I do that the pumpkins and large varieties of squash have hit the shelves as well.
So, with that in mind, here is some inspiration for you… the recipes that I am drooling over this month.
Forget The House, Let’s Talk Yards!
September 26, 2008
Well, well, well; our boys ARE human after all. As all of Patriot Nation already knows, the Pats looked horrible against Miami last Sunday, losing 38-13. Shortly after the game, a friend of mine said to me “That’s it! I’m not taking the Pats again for the rest of the season. They stink!” Oh Boy! I envisioned echoes of the same scenario being vehemently spoken in watering holes throughout Boston. Although, I don’t agree, I do think that what goes up, must come down or at the very least, level out a bit. Frankly, I think the Pats just stumbled some, they’re human, let’s just give them a break. We are spoiled by the outstanding at home win record, so much so that any loss has become unacceptable. Hey, it was only ONE game. I’m sure our boys will just shake it off and get back to work. The Patriots are on a BYE in week 4, which will give them an opportunity to lick their wounds, re-group, and come up with a good game plan that Cassel can be successful with. Joining the Pats on our first BYE WEEK are the Lions, Colts, Dolphins, Giants and Seahawks.
Buffalo just barely achieved a win last week when Oakland came to town. At half-time, the score was 9-7 Oakland – - and then late into the fourth quarter, the total went from 16-7 Oakland within minutes to an incredible 24-23 Buffalo Squeak Win. Where did THAT Oakland Raider team come from? Oakland’s WR Johnny Lee Higgins had one reception for 84 yards and a touchdown. Imagine having that job? You make one run at 84 yards, carrying a football, as fast as you can, dodging gigantic guys trying to maim you, and you will get paid….hmmm, well, what do you think a regular wide receiver would get paid? At least $10k a game right? 84 yards for ten thousand – that sounds reasonable, and not the least bit crazy. Seriously though, imagine being Oakland? What a horrible loss for them ~ it must have seemed like Buffalo was toying with them right up until the very end, just to keep it interesting. It was almost like an opossum playing dead and then popping up and running away with your bread and butter. Bummer Dudes. This Sunday, Buffalo (-8) goes to St. Louie and Oakland (+7) hosts San Diego as home dogs. How ironic is that? Read more
Milk Warning
September 26, 2008
BOSTON — Officials from the Boston Public Health Commission and Massachusetts Department of Public Health today advised consumers to avoid milk or milk products from China because of the possible presence of melamine, until laboratory testing is completed to determine whether the products are harmful.
Dr. Anita Barry, director of the Commission’s Communicable Disease Control Division, said public health authorities were not of aware of any infants, children, or adults in Boston becoming ill as a result of consuming adulterated milk products from China, and said the warning was “precautionary.” Read more
If Your Kid Skips School You May Have To See A Judge
September 25, 2008
Boston City Councillor At-Large John R. Connolly and Boston City Council President Maureen Feeney have proposed requiring parents of chronically truant students to appear before a judge in court. In legislation filed today, Connolly and Feeney call for a public hearing to establish a model for reducing truancy in the Boston Public Schools by focusing on parental accountability and family intervention for children with excessive unexcused absences.
“Yesterday’s chronically truant students become today’s dropouts, and too often, tomorrow’s offenders,” Connolly said. “Our goal is to fundamentally alter our approach to prioritize parental involvement on an issue that touches on education and public safety.” Read more
PaintBox: Boston Artists Take On City Utility Boxes
September 25, 2008
PaintBox, a new pilot program organized by Mayor Menino’s Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events and the Boston Art Commission, has invited ten local artists, as well as members of the Mayor’s Mural Crew, to design and paint neighborhood utility boxes. The project is funded by Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services/Boston Shines program and is geared towards the recognition and celebration of local artists. Once professionally painted, these utility boxes will be resistant to graffiti. “This is a very creative way to bring both beauty and individualized neighborhood character to the urban streetscape,” said Mayor Menino. What I Did on My Summer Vacation – Part Deux
September 25, 2008
As you might remember from last week’s article the ladies had decided the best way to pay homage to the Hill-Ree-Ree(my sister-in-law and bride-to-be) was to take her to St. John. Aside from the vice grip this became on my wallet I had a bigger problem…the Hillbitty. How the heck was I going to take care of the Hillbitty for four nights?
Before I knew it the time had come. It was the Wednesday before the Hillbetty would depart for her bachelorette party extravaganza in St. John. I preferred to call it the “Insanely Overpriced Baby Products Trade Show 2008″.
Of the twelve ladies going to St. John nine or so were mothers. It seemed to me the focus would be less on risqué scavenger hunts and more on plastic free bottles, dishwasher ready labels, and the rumor that the next Bob Stroller could actually change a babies diaper while out on the mid-morning walk.
