Vote Positive, Not Negative
October 31, 2008
A friend told me about a recent confrontation he had with a Barack Obama supporter. The reason I point it out is not to say anything bad about Obama supporters but rather to point out how extreme people can get.
My friend was at a concert and the band playing made a plea to the audience to remember to vote for Barack Obama. The audience cheered and my friend, forever the antagonist, yelled “Commie”. Most around him laughed as they could sense his sarcasm. One person within earshot, however, did not feel the same and came running over to him, got in his face, and called him a racist, then ran off.
Have we gotten that far off the rails? Is it now so politically correct to support Barack Obama that if you don’t you’re a racist? Have we really gotten to a point where only your opinion is the right one and everyone else is wrong?
Now this stupidity is not exclusive to the left, the right is fraught with foolish and borderline crazy conspiracy theories about Obama as well, from him being a Muslim to not being a US citizen. The point being we must stop and take a good look at what we are about to do on Tuesday and not be distracted by the extremes on both sides.
For better or worse either Barack Obama or John McCain will be the President Elect come Wednesday (we hope), and honestly no matter who wins the world is not going to end. Read more
Forget The House, Let’s Talk Yards……..
October 31, 2008
Ellie was utterly delighted with our Pats last Sunday and for hours following the game she would burst into sporadic giggles and throw her arms over her head in the universal Touchdown posture. The Patriots propelled themselves to a 5-2 record with their 23-16 win against an improved Rams team. It was a close game, the Rams took the lead in the second quarter and then the Pats tied the score 13-13 in the third. Toward the end, Cassel did a nice job with a 23-yard pass to Moss that set up a 15-yard touchdown pass to Faulk, and the Patriots went ahead by a touchdown. With three minutes left in the fourth, the Rams fought to tie the game by moving forward steadily from their own 10-yard line to a 3rd and 15 at the Pats 38-yard line, which left them with plenty of time to score and put them in good shape to go for the tie with 1:24 left on the clock….of course that was before Delta O’Neal picked off Bulger on NE’s 16-yard line and then proceeded to run it back to St. Louie’s 37 yard line….Whalla…end of game. Instead of kicking the field goal and allowing people to guess correctly on the Over in that game, the knee went down, we got ourselves a win, and the Patriots completed a perfect game, penalty-wise for the first time in team history. Giddy up. Read more

BPD Commisioner & DA Conley Urge a No Vote on Question 2

At a recent press conference, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley joined together to encourage residents to vote ‘No’ on Question 2. The Boston Police Department and the Suffolk Count District Attorney’s Office strongly oppose the decriminalization of possession for one ounce or less of marijuana.
90 Percent Recession Proof By Volume
October 30, 2008
No matter where I turn lately, every conversation is about the economy and peoples finances. From the school yard to the soccer field I am constantly meeting people who complain they just do not have enough money to go around. You turn on the news and the top story every night is the economy and the recession we are in. Businesses are struggling and many are closing shop.
Then you drive down Centre Street and you see the massive addition Blanchards Liquors just completed. I live up the street from Gary’s Liquors on the VFW Parkway and they have been renovating the spot next door to them for the last 2-3 months. They will be expanding and adding food soon. I knew being in the liquor business was good. But this goes to show it is recession proof (in West Roxbury anyway).
I guess it does make sense. In good times and in bad a drink always complements the occasion. In happy times, glasses are raised and a good luck toast is spoken. At solemn occasions, you raise that same glass and say a remembrance.
In good economic times, you might go to the liquor store and grab something small for the house before heading out that night. When money is tight, you grab a little more for the house and stay in. Instead of going out, you invite friends over and watch the game at home.
I know my family is tightening up. Instead of eating out we are cooking more on the weekends or ordering in. Too bad it wasn’t Eddie’s Liquors! My wife could get that family room she wants even in these economic times.

City of Boston Credit Union Email & Text Scam
October 29, 2008
I actually got one of these emails and thought it was legit but thought better to send any info as it did not feel right. Always be wary of giving any banking or personal information over the web and text.
BANKING SCAM
The E-5 Community Service Office would like to notify the residents of West Roxbury and Roslindale of recent banking scams being reported. It has been brought to our attention that individuals who are claiming to be employees of the City of Boston Credit Union are contacting members via e-mail and cell phone text messages notifying them that there are problems with their accounts. The e-mail and text messages provide a number for the individuals to call in order to correct the alleged “problems.” These telephone numbers are NOT accurate and they DO NOT connect to an employee of the City of Boston Credit Union. Instead, these victims are calling fraudulent individuals who have all intentions of acquiring the victim’s bank account numbers in order to deplete their accounts. Also, the victims contacted via e-mail are provided with a link to click on which when they do they are asked for their account numbers. Again, this is NOT a legitimate site and therefore the account numbers are not secured once they are typed in. Read more
District E-5 Halloween Safety Tips
October 29, 2008

- Parents should establish a route for children and stay within familiar areas and surroundings.
- An adult should accompany young children.
- Remind kids not to enter strangers’ homes or cars.
- Remind children to avoid homes without an outside light on.
- Take a flashlight.
- Set rules about not eating treats until kids get home. Be sure to inspect all treats before allowing kids to eat them.
- Never cross the street between parked cars.
- Watch open flames from jack-o-lanterns as they can catch costumes and long wigs on fire.
It is also important to ensure that your home is safe and accessible to trick-or-treaters.
As adults there are some very simple things we can do to make the evening safe and fun for everyone!
- Turn on your porch light and sit outside to distribute treats. Encourage your neighbors to join you. It makes the whole neighborhood safer.
- Move lit jack-o-lanterns off the porch where kids get bunched up if they are trick-or-treating in groups.
- Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
- Drive slowly all evening -you never know what creature may suddenly cross your path!!
As always, we advise residents to report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
