February 27, 2009
There was a 3 alarm fire this afternoon on Kingsland Road in West Roxbury. We are happy to report that no one was injured. The initial reports stated that a candle was knocked over inside the home. There was additional concerns because the elderly couple had oxygen tanks in the basement. Bystanders claimed they could see shooting flames from blocks away. Boston Fire Department responded quickly and put the fire out.
The Mud is Flying: Who is Throwing It May Surprise You
February 26, 2009
Both The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald took turns this week whacking Mayor Menino. The stories were about work done on his home and if he improperly used city workers to do the work. Angela Menino, the Mayor’s wife, was able to find the receipts for this work that was done over 10 years ago. The Globe reported that she was able to produce receipts for the work done. The Herald, which was the more hard-hitting of the two newspapers, did not report this information.
One of the news stations tonight reported that The Rocky Mountain News is going out of business Friday, February 27th. The newspaper is Colorado’s oldest paper and has been around since 1859.
CNBC reports:
“The News is the latest – and largest – newspaper to fail amid a recession that has been especially brutal for the industry. Four owners of 33 U.S. daily newspapers have sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the past 2 1/2 months. A number of other newspapers are up for sale.”
What is my point? My point for writing this is to point out that our city’s newspapers seem more interested in writing half truths and innuendos to sell newspapers rather than reporting accurate stories. They are more concerned with having a blood bath for a mayoral election so that they can sell more newspapers. The mud they are slinging is much more than what the candidates themselves are slinging. It reminds me of a WWF wrestling match when the “referee” pulls a weapon from his trousers and bashes one of the wrestlers in the head. Read more

Representative Rush Receives 2009 Semper Fidelis Public Servant Award
February 26, 2009
Representative Mike Rush (D-West Roxbury) was recently presented with the Semper Fidelis Public Servant Award by the Metrowest Detachment #1037 of the Marine Corps League at a State House ceremony commemorating the Battle of Iwo Jima. This distinguished honor is given each year to a public servant who advocates tirelessly on behalf of veterans and active military servicemen and women. Representative Rush, a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, has filed and co-sponsored several pieces of legislation that increase veterans’ benefits and access to educational opportunities.
“I am truly honored to receive this distinguished award” said Rush. “To be recognized by such an outstanding organization as the Marine Corps League, on a day on which we remember one of our nation’s costliest battles, is simply humbling. I will continue to fight hard on Beacon Hill, on behalf of those who have served and continue to serve our country”.
The State House ceremony was attended by veterans of WWII, including several from the Battle of Iwo Jima, as well as the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the first Gulf War and the current war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Rabid Bat Found Near Franklin Park Zoo
February 26, 2009
A bat found Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Franklin Park Zoo has tested positive for rabies, and the Boston Public Health Commission is reminding residents to steer clear of stray and wild animals that may carry rabies.
The bat was discovered on the ground near the Flight Cage, off Pierpont Road. It was not part of the zoo’s animal collection and was sent to the Dr. William A. Hinton State Laboratory Institute for testing. The bat was disoriented and out during the middle of the day, which is unusual. Results confirmed that the bat had rabies. Public health officials advise anyone who may have come in contact with this bat to contact their health care provider for an evaluation. Read more

Wallets & Purses Stolen at Local Stores – Be Alert
February 24, 2009
Over the past weekend several victims reported to E-5 officers that while shopping in neighborhood stores their wallets were stolen. The common factor in the reported larcenies was that the victims left their personal belongings unattended while they were shopping. Oftentimes we assume that placing our wallets down on the counter while paying or leaving our pocketbooks in the cart while going to grab an item is safe because the items are in close proximity to us; however it only takes a few seconds for a criminal to walk by and grab these possessions.
