Social Media Seminar at West on Centre

March 30, 2009

Do you want to know the secrets of social marketing? Tim White of Century 21 and Sharman Cree from Sharper Enterprises are here to answer that question. The effect of living in a “digital age” on small businesses everywhere is nothing short of transformative. For the first time in history, small businesses have a means of delivering their marketing and branding messages to both large and highly targeted “niche” audiences in a cost effective, efficient and highly rewarding communication system. New and emerging social media tools and platforms, including social networks, are changing the way small businesses market their goods and services and interact with their customer-base. A true marketing revolution is underway that surpasses even that of the invention of the printing press.

Come by West on Centre on Monday April 6, 2009 from 7am to 9am.

Let’s Hear from Sen. Walsh’s Constituents

March 30, 2009

Well it has not been a smooth transition for our State senator into her new post at Mass. Health and Education Facilities Authority (HEFA).  Since Governor Patrick’s announcement on March 12th that he was appointing Senator Marian Walsh to become the assistant executive director at HEFA, there has been a public outcry on everything from the salary to motivations behind the appointment.  Amid the outcry, the Globe reported last week that Senator Walsh requested that her compensation be lowered from $175,000 to $120,000.  This weekend the Globe  then reported that there are many questions regarding the Patrick administrations involvement in the hiring process.

Now that everyone else has chimed in what do you the constituents think?  If you were advising the Senator what would you tell her to do?  Take our poll and let’s see your comments.

Table Critic Review of MJ’s in Roslindale

March 27, 2009

MJ’s is a neighborhood sub and pizza joint, through and through. It’s not a place where one should go seeking the environs of more upscale, brick oven pizza restaurants, but that is as it should be in a place like this. It sits on a reasonably well trafficked corner of Belgrade Ave, less than a mile from Roslindale Square, in a densely populated working class neighborhood filled with small homes; the owner, Steve O’Malley, proudly caters to his neighbors, and the restaurant reflects that ethic. Though the small seating area is not fancy by any measure, the obvious rapport between Steve, his staff, and their loyal customers creates a friendly and inviting atmosphere.

As I arrived for a Saturday afternoon lunch, an older woman entered at the same time as I. Steve greeted her by name and noted that she had been a customer for years. We also encountered two teenage girls who addresses Steve as Mr. O’Malley, and a father with two young children, who also clearly knew Steve well. Eating in that kind of place, where the proprietor knows and cares about his neighborhood customer base, and where that affection is clearly shared by the clientele, is always a fun experience. Steve, who is a lifelong veteran of the Boston food industry and has been in this neighborhood for many years, clearly values being a neighborhood eatery. MJ’s is a very comfortable place to eat at any time, the kind of restaurant where you can feel good going right after a workout or for an early evening bite before going out. Read more

The 3B’s Boston Marathon Fundraiser

March 26, 2009

On March 28th some Parkway residents are celebrating 354 days until Saint Patrick’s Day at the Grand Canal in Boston. Why limit your self to just one Paddy’s day when you can celebrate twice!!! The 3B’s (Billy Haddad, Brian Wadman, and Brendan Greally), are hosting Boston’s #1 Irish Rebel Rock Band, The Fenian Sons and trying to raise a little money for a great cause.

They are running the Boston Marathon in order to raise money for the Charlestown Boy’s and Girl’s Club so there is a suggested donation of $20.  If you were there last year you know already that this event will be off the hook, so try to come between 6-10pm to get there early for the meet and greet with the “athletes”, but the band will be there all night!

Everyone is welcome! We encourage you to invite more people and bring some friends…You will NOT be disappointed!  Click here for FaceBook Invite

Senator Walsh to Take Lower Salary in New Post

March 24, 2009

From Boston.com By Frank Phillips, Globe Staff

With Governor Deval Patrick facing public outrage over her appointment, state Senator Marian Walsh is asking a state authority to lower her planned salary from $175,000 to $120,000, a move that Patrick aides hope will quell the uproar, a senior administration source said today.

The reduced salary reflects the findings of a search firm that was used to determine the appropriate pay for Walsh in her position as the Massachusetts Health and Education Facilities Authority’s assistant executive director.

The source insisted Walsh made her own decision, without any pressure from the governor, to seek a reduction in her salary. Her pay will still be far above the $76,440 that the 54-year old lawmaker now makes as the Senate’s majority whip. Walsh, who has not yet resigned her Senate seat, could not be reached for comment this afternoon. Read more

BPS Parents to Lobby State House Thursday

March 24, 2009

BPS Parents are planning to lobby state officials Thursday from 11:30 to 2:00 at the State House.

Why are they lobbying, you ask?  Here is what their email said:

This is how the Governor has divided up the $800M stimulus package -
Higher Education – $200M – $400M over 2 years
High Schools EXCEPT Boston $168M – $336 over 2 years
He has said Boston will NOT GET ANY MORE MONEY!

We can’t roll over and let this happen!!!! Now there is only about $170M left. He needs to send some of it to Boston. He can’t tell Boston that we need to fix our own problems. How???? We can’t raise revenue!

Please come out on Thursday – don’t rely on others to take the responsibility! The responsibility is all of OURS!

Speakers include Mayor Menino, Councilors Connolly, Yoon, Ross and Superintendent Carol Johnson
