This Week in Parkway Baseball
April 30, 2009
WEEK ONE SPRING 2009
It was an exciting first week in Parkway Little League. It started with the parade on Saturday under ominous skies but the rain held off. The parade featured the 2008 Massachusetts Little League State Champion Parkway National All-Stars and Parkway legend Steve Slyne as the Grand Marshall. There were duck boats and bands and the Boston Police Gaelic Column was on hand to entertain the crowd.
At the end of the parade, which went from Fallon Field in Roslindale to the Little League complex on Baker St, an enormous American flag, on loan for the day from Richie Gormley, was displayed in the infield. Mayor Menino and other local politicians were present along with West Roxbury resident, and Baltimore Orioles bench coach, David Jauss was on hand to help administer the Little League Pledge.
Finally after a long, cold and snowy winter baseball is back in the Parkway. Here are just some of the highlights: Read more
Ohrenberger Pre-School Program Saved for One More Year
April 30, 2009
The City of Boston changed it’s deadline for the closing of the pre-school program at the Ohrenberger School. The Boston Centers for Youth and Families were set to cut pre-school and after school programs next year in an attempt to save money at 10 of their facilities. The parents at the Ohrenbereger school banded together and fought passionately for their children and for the fate of the dedicated staff.
Late Monday night, word came from Mayor Menino’s office saying that the pre-school program has been saved for the 2009 – 2010 school year.
West Roxbury Reads Events
April 29, 2009
All the tables were filled when the West Roxbury Reads series, sponsored by the Friends of the West Roxbury Branch Library, began its fifth week Monday, April 27, with its second taste of cooking with locally raised foods at Phuket Thai Restaurant, 1856 Centre Street. Chef and owner Radtanawree “Na” Dongparteep served her guests a three-course prix-fixe dinner she said could easily be prepared at home.
The Phuket dinner, and other dinners on consecutive Mondays, as well as lectures, slide shows, and tours, focus on themes in the best-selling non-fiction book In Defense of Food, by investigative journalist and author Michael Pollan. Pollan will speak to the West Roxbury community on the evening of Tuesday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. His talk will be preceded by a Friends-only reception at the library at 6:30 p.m.

Parkway Girls Softball League’s Week in Review
April 28, 2009
Parkway Girls Softball League wrapped up its first full week of the season with 21 games played across the four divisions. Below is a summary of a few games from this past week.
U13 Division – Orioles Sneak by the Chickadees
After pitching a full game the day before, Chickadees pitcher Jamie Weisenberg and catcher Christine Conley battled the heat and a well hitting Orioles line-up to keep the Chickadees close throughout the game. Megan Lawler and Jen Murphy provided some offense for the Chickadees, while Paige Mulrey and Paige Dougherty got key hits for the Orioles. Caitlyn Berry and Jillian O’Malley pitched for the Orioles, finishing with a 10-9 victory.
U10 Division – Her-ricanes top the Diamond Dogs
Olivia McGrath pitched a strong game and helped her own cause with a double in the third inning to lift the Her-ricanes over the Diamond Dogs. Kelsey Murphy of the Diamond Dogs made a great catch when Her-ricanes first baseman Mauve Moynihan drilled a line drive to left field. Murphy threw it to third to complete a double play, and saved at least a couple runs. Read more

A Letter to the Community from Parkway Little League
April 24, 2009
As most of you are aware, McDonough Field was completely renovated with new fences, new irrigation system, new EVERYTHING last fall. Currently we are unable to use this field as we continue to wait for the grass to grow in order to complete the renovation and make it safe for our children. This project has required A LOT OF MONEY, TIME & DEDICATION of many people. Last fall, OUR new field was vandalized, and continues to be trespassed on by kids who think it is a playground.
We are writing to ask that you PLEASE tell your children, friends, and players that they are NOT allowed on McDonough, Praught, or Bunker fields, for any reason other than a scheduled game with their team. There is not to be any playing on these fields, as we work VERY hard to keep them in tip top shape for our league! These fields are PRIVATE PROPERTY, and if this activity continues, we will have to take drastic measures. If you should see people on the field, kindly remind them that no one is allowed on them for play.
We ask for your full cooperation in this matter for the betterment of our fields, our league, and our children’s safety.
Thank you,
Parkway Little League
Mayor Menino to Run for Another Term
April 23, 2009
To no one’s surprise, Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced yesterday that he will be running for an unprecedented fifth term as Mayor of the City of Boston. Menino made his announcement from the offices of Digitas in downtown Boston. Menino, a former City Councilor from the Readville section of Hyde Park, was first elected into office in November 1993 after defeating Dorchester Rep. James Brett. Mayor Menino has been reelected 4 times by large margins, defeating former City Councilor Peggy Davis Mullen in 2001 and Former City Councilor, now Suffolk County Clerk Magistrate, Maura Hennigan in 2007.
This year the mayor faces his toughest race, since his election in 1993, going up against At-Large City Councilors Michael Flaherty (South Boston) and Sam Yoon (Dorchester), Boston developer Kevin McCrea, (South End), and according to Universal Hub many others including former City Councilor Gareth Saunders (Roxbury) William Theodore Leonard (Boston) and John Hanney ( South Boston).
This will also be a busy summer for the city council at large races with John Connolly (West Roxbury) and Stephen Murphy (Hyde Park) as the only incumbants with 2 open seats. At present, former Michael Flaherty aid Andrew Kenneally (East Boston -OFWR), Martin Hogan (Dorchester), former John Kerry aid Ayanna Pressley, community activist Hiep Q. Nguyen (Dorchester), Robert Fortes (Boston), Doug Bennett (Boston), and YMCA Director Ego Ezedi, (Roxbury), have expressed interest in the open seats. Stay Tuned here for all your election coverage and take this weeks Mayoral Poll.
