Forum to Tackle Children’s Mental Health, June 3rd

May 29, 2009

The numbers are staggering:

  • Of the 140,000 young people in Massachusetts who need mental health services each year, more than 100,000 do not get them.
  • Suicide remains the third leading cause of death among young people aged 10-24.
  • Tragically, 90 percent of children who take their own lives have a diagnosable and treatable mental disorder at the time of their death.
  • Nearly 50 percent of students with a mental disorder drop out of school.

On Wednesday, June 3, families of children with mental illness, doctors and nurses, educators and social workers, lawmakers, other child advocates and community members will gather in Boston to share their personal experiences and discuss the critical need to fix a broken system.

Interesting Home Listing in West Roxbury

May 27, 2009

This might be a strange coincidence, but a Marian Walsh on Brook Farm Road has put her home on the market today.  We looked on Public Records, and it appears there is only one Marian Walsh on that street.  So, I assume it is our State Senator.

Does this mean our State Senator is stepping down?  Do stay tuned!

May 26, 2009

Well with such a beautiful holiday weekend behind us, aside from the Biblical rains on Saturday afternoon, it is time to think of summer.  The Memorial Day weekend, otherwise known as the unofficial start of summer, made me think of what to do this summer, especially with the economy being what it is.

Let us know what you have planned and help your neighbors with some cost saving ideas.

Boston Latin and The Winsor Closed Due to H1N1

May 19, 2009

The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) announced today that the Winsor School, a private girls’ school in the Longwood area, will close for seven days starting tomorrow, May 20, because of unusually high levels of influenza-like illness in recent days. Public health officials said they hope that the temporary closure will prevent new infections and avoid unnecessary illness.

This comes with news today that The Boston Latin School has been closed until next week as well.  The schools are only blocks away from one another.  The Dana Hall School in Wellesley has also been closed due to H1N1. Read more

Broadway in the Parkway

May 19, 2009

The young men and women of the West Roxbury Community Center Players (WRCC Players) should be very proud of the performances they put on this past weekend in Suessical Jr at the WR High School.  A standing room only audience was on hand for the 10th Season of the WRCC Players in this year’s presentation of Suessical Jr.

Director Bill Jacob, aka Mr J, directed 85 children from the Parkway area ranging in ages from 4 to 16 years old in what many are calling the best show in the 10 years of the community theatre.  The show is a musical based on the Dr Suess book, Horton Hears a Who. Casting began in February with rehearsals going from March to May and everyone did their part.

Some of the highlights of the show were the performances of Hannah Woodsum (The Cat) as the stories narrator and comedian.  Conor Freeley played a great Horton, and WRCC Players new comer Jack Fitzgerald nailed it as JoJo, the young boy who saves the Who’s.  Great vocal performances were put on by Kelly Tice (Mayzie), Barbara Kirby (Sour Kangaroo) and Joanna McDonough (Gertrude). Cleveland to Boston – One Car, One Mom, 3 Kids

May 19, 2009

I’m a mom. I multi-task. I juggle. I make things happen. That’s what I do. I don’t find my accomplishments extraordinary or worthy of praise. But once in a while, I surprise myself.

So when the opportunity to road trip from Boston to Cleveland with my husband, with the known fact that I would be returning to Boston alone, I took on the challenge. I should probably add here that I wasn’t really returning alone, just driving solo; I would be accompanied by my three and a half year old, two year old and eight month old sons. And when I did return home, my husband would still be on a business trip for one more day.

I can’t say there was much planning on the way to Cleveland. My husband was able to run into work for an hour and we were still on the road before 11. I made phone calls to family and friends on the way, arranging dinner dates and play dates. We stopped when we needed to and rushed to use the restroom, eat and resume our drive. My husband drove most of the way while I jumped in and out of the front seat to entertain the kids, pass out snacks, fill sippy cups and retrieve dropped blankets and toys. It took us 11 hours. We made good time and the boys did well, considering. And when we arrived at Grandma’s house, the boys were so excited that we let them play for a half-hour or so before settling them into bed.
