Summer “Vacation” Week 1
June 29, 2009
Day 1
It was only 9:00 A.M. and I had already relinquished all control to the children. They were both eating ring pops for breakfast and Maddy had taken her diaper off 3 times already, peed on the floor and got the broom to “weep it” herself. I am wondering if anyone has invented some sort of apparatus to keep diapers on (along the lines of a chastity belt maybe — HA, that could come in handy again in a few years!!!). The weather is certainly not helping! If I make one more zoo out of blocks I’m going to have to check myself into a zoo, permanently. Ava — the kid I have to drag out of bed every morning for school- was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 6:30 this morning. Of course she was. I’m wondering…..do these things happen in your house too?

RECYCLE MORE…Trash Less
June 29, 2009
As of July 1, 2009, you no longer have to separate paper and cardboard from cans and bottles. Instead, you may mix all recyclables together in one large container. Less sorting, more RECYCLING!
To provide you with more space to recycle, over the next 12 months, the City will be delivering large wheeled carts to residences with one to six units. You will receive notification shortly before your cart is delivered. When you receive your cart, put your address on it and please take care of it; it will not be replaced. If you move, please leave your cart behind for the next resident.

Be Vigilant or Your Car Could Be Next
June 26, 2009
The Area E-5 Police would like to inform citizens of recent tire thefts occurring in the West Roxbury and Roslindale areas. Over the past several weeks officers have taken several reports for tires and rims being stolen from motor vehicles.
We are asking citizens to be vigilant! Pay close attention to any out of the ordinary incidences occurring in your neighborhood. If you hear a noise late at night, or if your dog starts barking at something outside we advise you to check out the situation discreetly and call 9-1-1 for police assistance if you discover that a crime or suspicious activity is occurring. Even if you aren’t sure what it might be-CALL!! We would rather show up and have it be nothing then have someone fall victim to a crime. Don’t try and scare them off yourself. If the police are notified of the crime in progress they are then able to respond to the reported location. If the criminals are unaware anyone has seen them and/or called the police then they will most likely still be in the area once police arrive. If the criminals see you turn on a light, hear you yell, or hear an alarm they will flee the area making it difficult for police to apprehend them. Typically, in these particular types of crimes, one person or one group is responsible for most of the same crimes that are occurring in the area. Therefore, once caught, the particular crime will die down. Again, please call 9-1-1 for assistance in any out of the ordinary situation. And if you or someone you know has been victimized by this particular crime, please visit your local police station to file a report.
Officers have discovered that the most frequently stolen wheels are from: Read more

Parkway Reunion 2009 – What Are Your Thoughts?
June 23, 2009
We were waved into the massive tent by the Fontaine’s Chicken. The chicken, we found out later, was the special guest. The rumors flying around beforehand on who the special guest was were pretty funny. People’s expectations were very high from the New Kids on the Block to the Dropkick Murphy’s.
Once inside, the tent was tastefully decorated and filled with people still in the neighborhood and many more from the past. Estimates I’ve heard had the number of people at 1,200.
We would like to know what your thoughts are from the reunion. Please leave your comments.
iScream Works West Roxbury Main Streets Business of The Year
June 15, 2009
On Thursday, June 11th, Boston MAIN Streets presented their awards to the volunteer and business of the year from the 19 districts in the Boston area. It was a wonderful night of celebration and many thanks to the individuals who work tirelessly to make the Main Streets program a continued success. In West Roxbury the business of the year went to iScream Works. Greg Palladino accepted the award and was commended for bringing mouth watering Brigham’s ice cream back to Centre Street and also for giving back to the community with his Toy for Tots campaign and other various charities.
The volunteer of the year went to Janet Bakas. Not only has she taken on the vice president position with WRMS, she has also spearheaded the biggest fundraiser for the organization, Pitching In, teaming them with the Jimmy Fund and creating much excitement and proceeds that benefit both causes. Pitching In will take place this year at the House of Blues on Landsdowne Street on September 10th and is sure to be a huge crowd pleaser. Janet is hard at work to pull out all the surprizes and hopes to exceed last years contribution. WRMS is lucky to have her on board!

My 150 Cents
June 9, 2009
This morning I was listening to the news when I heard that the Boston Newspaper Guild, which represents around 700 Boston Globe employees, voted down the recent contract that may have helped to save the paper. As a result the NY Times Company (owners of the Globe) decided to impose a 23% pay cut.
Now being a life long resident of the Parkway, I know a lot of people that work for the Globe; in fact I have more than a few relatives there. All I could think of was how tough it would be to take a 23% pay cut. I can’t imagine what I would do if I had to endure a cut of almost 1/3 of my salary. With that in mind, I told myself I would go and buy the Globe today. Yes the actual paper (remember that).
I have always been one to love the paper. There is something about holding it in your hands and flipping through the pages to not only see what has been happening in news and sports, but to check up on the local pols and what kind of nonsense they are up to today.
Up until recently the Globe and the Herald were delivered to my doorstep every morning. I loved going down the driveway and picking it up to read the headlines, especially on snowy days when I knew I wasn’t leaving the house all day. However, with financial times being what they are the newspaper delivery was the first to go. It has been difficult but I do have ParkwayBoston.com (shameless plug) with the links to all my favorite media outlets. But I digress. Read more
