Roslindale Arts Alliance Sponsors “Bring Your Own Butterfly” Event Thursday Night
July 30, 2009
Bring Your Own Butterfly is a program that brings together children of the United States, Canada, and Mexico in celebration and conservation of the monarch butterflies and their habitat. Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate from eastern North America to the Oyamel fir forests of Mexico to spend the winter. At the same time, children in North America create paper butterflies and send them to the children who live beside the monarch sanctuaries in the Oyamel. The butterflies carry a special written message to the Mexican students, who watch over the butterflies all winter, then send them back in the spring with their own message. This completes the “migration” of the paper butterflies just as the real butterflies complete their own migration.
Bring Your Own Butterfly emphasizes the conservation of the forests and the monarchs, raising environmental awareness, as well as creating a bond between children of two different parts of the world. We welcome you to participate in the program.
There will also be FREE kids art with the Roslindale Arts Alliance and a concert sponsored by The City of Boston Arts, Tourism and Special Events.
Burying the Lead (and Hatchet)
July 28, 2009
This is the first blog post from our newest contributor Matt O’Malley. Matt grew up in the Parkway, ran for public office, and remains very active in the community.
On Wednesday evening, President Obama held a prime time televised press conference in which he explained in great detail his sweeping (and innovative) health care plan as well as it’s ramifications on (and reflections of) the economy.
The President’s health care plan may represent the signature policy piece of his first term. Certainly, it will effect tens of millions of America. You would think that media coverage and public discourse would reflect the enormity of this ambitious proposal.
You would be wrong.
Locally and nationally coverage of the press conference seemed to solely concern President Obama’s off-hand remark that the Cambridge police “acted stupidly” in arresting Harvard Prof. Henry Gates in his home earlier this week. Read more
Forget the Ryder Cup, We Have the Parkway Cup
July 21, 2009
…and Roslindale is the big winner!
The first annual Parkway Cup took place on July 15th at Wampatuck C.C. in Canton. Modeled after the PGA’s Ryder Cup, in which teams from the U.S. face off against teams from Europe in rounds of golf, it is the brainchild of West Roxbury resident Ryan Mason of Parkway in Motion (a local non-profit group). The tournament consisted of two teams, Roslindale and West Roxbury, with each four-some consisting of 2 players from each neighborhood. Not only was the day a lot of fun but there was some money raised for the Roche Family Community Center in West Roxbury as well.
In the end Roslindale came out on top with the final score, Roslindale – 436 & West Roxbury – 431. The highest scoring two some was Brian & Joe Keaveney (Roslindale) with 40 points. Read more

Boston Police Arrest Hynes Field Lumberjack – Accused of Cutting Trees Last Summer
July 15, 2009
On August 25, 2008, officers from Area E-5 (West Roxbury) responded to a radio call for a vandalism report in the area of 520 VFW Parkway (Hynes Field). On arrival, officers spoke to officials from the Boston Parks Department who stated that several trees in the park had been cut down and moved. Specifically, 10 trees (7 red maples and 3 honey locusts) had been cut and damaged. A search of the area enabled officers to locate and take possession of a hand saw. The hand saw was forwarded to the Boston Police Crime Lab for further analysis. Specifically, members of the Boston Police Latent Print Unit fumed the saw for latent print evidence. As a result of testing conducted at the lab, investigators were able to lift or recover a finger print belonging to the individual responsible for the damage done at the park. The prints were then forwarded to the AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) for a possible identification or match. However, no identification was forthcoming because the individual responsible for the vandalism likely had no criminal history or record. Read more

Parkway American All-Stars Begin Quest
July 14, 2009
The Parkway American All Stars won their first 2 district championship games and dropped their third game. They play undefeated Newton South Tuesday July 14 at the Baker Street complex in West Roxbury. Upcoming games will determine whether they can climb back into the lead.
Parkway Americans stymied by Newton Central pitcher, 5-0 (July 12)
Parkway ace CJ Golbranson threw a 2 hitter through 4 1/3 innings, but it wasn’t enough against Central’s pitcher, who had a 1 hitter through 5 1/3. Parkway’s 2 hits came off the bat of Cam Gingras, a lead off single in the 2nd and a powerful double to the wall in the 6th. The boys also pulled off two masterful pickles to stop runs from scoring. In the 2nd, after a double pushed a runner to break for home, Gingras at 3B threw to catcher Joe King to make the tag. In the 5th, centerfielder Teddy Fitzgerald through a bullet to Gingras at 3rd, who threw to catcher Reza Pahlavi back to Gingras and finally to relief pitcher Finley Matthews who made the tag. Central scored 5 runs, 3 earned. Read more

Missing Teeth and the 4th of July
July 10, 2009
School’s Out Day 10: Missing Tooth
Just shy of her 6th b-day — Ava lost her first tooth today! We were in the kitchen and she asked for an apple….I said “OK, but it might make your tooth fall out (she had a VERY LOOSE ONE), be careful not to swallow it” (just in case it’s like the whole watermelon seed thing, I didn’t want her growing a set of dentures in there)…anyway, a few bites in and one of her bottom teeth fell out! At first she was alarmed, but after spitting her blood, saliva and chewed apple into my hand, she was relieved to see her tooth in there with the apple chunks.
It was hard to get too emotional while holding her regurgitated apple in my hand, but I did get a little teary-eyed! That little bottom tooth was the first tooth she ever cut — at 7.5 months. I personally think it is THE CUTEST THING when babies have those two little bottom teeth in their mouth full of gums! How did my sweet little baby (the one who screamed her head off every night from 10 PM to 2 AM, to the point where I almost gave the little colicky nightmare up for adoption) how did THAT little miracle get so big already? Anyway, we cleaned-up the blood, took a few pics with the apple and then Ava said with enthusiasm, “Let’s go outside and SHOW THE WORLD.” It must be nice to be the center of your own universe.
My question to all of you is: What’s the tooth fairy “good-for” these days anyway? (I would like to hear what she’s been leaving under those pillows lately). We are in tough economic times after all. Wait a minute, does she even work today, it’s technically a holiday!?!? Read more
