Watch Your Kids: Boston Police Issue West Roxbury Alert About Man in Van Asking About Candy

September 27, 2009

At approximately 5:00pm on Monday September 21st Area E5 officers responded to a radio call for a suspicious person on Manthorne Rd, West Roxbury. Upon arrival officers spoke to the caller and victim, who stated that on Sunday September 20th a mini van with wood paneling on the side, was observed by the victim and the victim’s friends at the intersection of Weld St. /Manthorne Rd. The victim stated the driver of the vehicle was “looking” at them. The same vehicle approached the victim the next day, Monday 9.21.2009 while the victim was walking home. The driver stated to the victim “Do you want a tootsie roll?” The victim stated “No” and continued to walk home.

The driver was described as a white male in his 40s. He was wearing sunglasses and a beige jacket. The male was unshaven and had balding grey hair. Area E5 officers were given a description on the vehicle and the suspect and the area was searched to no avail. There have been no further incidents with this individual that have been reported at this time.

Officers have been, and will continue to patrol school areas during times of dismissal. Parents should make sure to talk with their children about walking home with others and how to react if a vehicle does approach them while walking home. The victim did exactly as we would advise. Ignore the driver and keep walking. We also recommend that parents establish a neighbor that their child can go to if they are not home when the child gets home. Also, make sure children know that in any case of emergency they should dial 9-1-1 for police assistance.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Community Service Officers at 617.343.4564.

Forget the House, Let’s Talk Yards….

September 26, 2009

Eye Eye Eye, our hometown boys just fell apart down there in Jersey, didn’t they? What is going on? Will the real Patriots please step up! A jet-set lifestyle, two pregnant super-models, multiple multi-million dollar dwellings, knee surgery and a year off and now Hollywood Tom is losing games!?!?!?! What is up with that?? Brady needs to bring it down a notch or two. Go back to the fundamentals, establish your run game, stop the wild inaccurate cowboy throws, strengthen your offensive line, humble-up, go on a nature walk. Do something! Honestly. In last week’s 16-9 loss to the Jets, the Patriots looked awful. Tom Brady threw 23-47, 216 yards. That means that Brady threw the ball 47 times and connected or had a completion with 23 of them for a total of 216 yards. Last week, in Atlanta’s 28-20 at home win against Carolina, the Falcon’s QB, Matt Ryan threw 21-27, 220 yards. Yikes, that’s pretty darn accurate.

Sunday, Matt Ryan and his Falcons will be visiting Foxboro and the Pats are favored by 4.5-points. I have to be honest – - I am worried. The Falcons seem Hungry. The Patriots seem dumfounded as to how they lost last week. The Falcons have sharp teeth with snapping jaws and red tinted eyes. The Patriots have morning breath, crusty eyes, and are yawning, scratching their heads and smacking their lips. Read more

Pop Warner Opening Day Sunday at Westie High

September 25, 2009

Please join us as the NEW Parkway Pop Warner under the leadership of Jonathon Stratton kicks off their first home game this Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the West Roxbury Education Complex (formerly West Roxbury High School) where they will host Canton. The E Team coached by Kevin Hallinan (ages 7 – 9) will kick off at 9am followed by the A Team coached by Scott Croteau (ages 11-15) at 10:30am, the C Team coached by Mike Grenham (ages 9-12) at 12pm and the D Team coached by Jamie Polito (ages 8-11) at 1:30pm. This is the fourth game of the season for the Parkway Pop Warner teams which have played many competitive games in the past few weeks. They have traveled to Easton, Braintree and most recently to Mansfield. It is very exciting to see that all the time and hard work the players and coaches have committed to the program since early August is paying off. The players are executing the plays well, thinking on their feet and playing together as a team. This week’s games against Canton are expected to show the same competitiveness as was shown in the past weeks.

O’Malley’s Take on Tuesday’s Election

September 23, 2009

Overview
Yesterday’s preliminary election in Boston narrowed the field of four candidates down to two. Incumbent Mayor Tom Menino won an outright majority – 51% of all ballots cast; an impressive feat in a four candidate race. City Councilor Michael Flaherty won second place and the right to oppose the Mayor in the November 3rd election with 24% of the vote. City Councilor Sam Yoon narrowly missed entering into the final stretch of the race with a 21% third place finish and South End Developer Kevin McCrea rounded out the field with 4% of the vote.

Analysis
Simply put: Menino romped. Running roughshod over his opponents in most traditional wards, communities of color, and progressive neighborhoods, Menino is poised to win big in November. He claimed a win in 19 of the city’s 22 wards.
&nb sp;
Michael Flaherty was able to win three wards outright (which is noteworthy, as Menino only lost a handful of precincts in his 2005 race against Maura Hennigan and won every precinct in his 2001 race against Peggy Davis-Mullen). Flaherty took his native South Boston by a large margin and Charlestown by under 100 votes.

Flaherty’s efforts in Wards 16 and 20 – where he had hoped to put some points on the board – fell flat. Ward 16 (Neponset/Adams Village) went to Menino by about 300 votes and powerhouse Ward 20 (Roslindale/West Roxbury) went to Menino by about 2,000 votes. Read more
