Forget the House, Let’s Talk Yards…
November 28, 2009
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and you all enjoyed your families, friends, lots of good food and a few decent football games. There were three games on the tube on Thanksgiving. The appetizer game was Green Bay at Detroit where the Pack just marched up and down the field like gold and green point makers for a total score of 34-12. The main course was Oakland at Dallas where the Boys shook off last week’s abysmal so-called game and beat the Raiders 24-7. And the sweet and tasty dessert was the Giants at Denver, where the Broncos prevailed 26-6 as home dogs and managed to finally break the miserable losing streak they had going.
If you were watching Thursday night’s game, you had to have seen Josh McDaniels addressing his team after four trips to the red zone resulted in three field goals and only one touchdown. If you didn’t see, try and imagine…..the commentators said something like “Coach McDaniels isn’t happy…” or whatever and then unbeknownst to Coach McDaniels, the cameras and mikes swiveled to the Denver bench and we saw and HEARD him FLIP OUT while using extremely colorful language. Josh was completely validated in his reaction, although I don’t think he will appreciate the LIVE coverage. I don’t know about you guys, but I was saying the same stuff to my TV and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the coach and I were on the same page. Then, the NFL Network realized what had happened and cut to a commercial, when they came back the commentators were like “Uhm, sorry about that, uhm earmuffs kids, earmuffs.” It was hysterical. It really helped lighten up the “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” feeling of frustration that a girl who loves points was beginning to experience. Read more

Catholic Memorial Soccer Wins State Championships
November 25, 2009
Congratulations to the CM soccer team, who won the MIAA Division I State Championship on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 win over Western Mass champion Ludlow.
In leading the Knights through an impeccable six-game postseason win-streak, Coach John Finn ’89 earned his school’s first state championship in his fifth season as head coach.
A solid all-around team, the Knights let in only one goal during regulation in the entire tournament. They fought against elimination in five sudden-death overtime periods and one penalty-kick showdown.

The PINCH Foundation Needs You…
November 25, 2009
The PINCH Foundation, like most foundations of its kind, has in this past year experienced an increase in requests for assistance. Because of your consistent willingness to give, we have been able to be there for others during a time of heartache, crises, loss and/or other concern in which reaching out for help was the situation in which others found themselves.
Now, we at PINCH, hope you can join us by participating in whatever financial means you are able. We have been asked to help a very large family in which the father has died. Also, we will soon participate in an effort to provide nearly 250 gifts to homeless veterans. Read more
Adopt a Snowflake Campaign
November 24, 2009
Once again West Roxbury Main Streets is hoping to light up Centre Street with our fabulously beautiful holiday snowflakes. The snowflakes bring a festive flair to Centre Street and we hope it will encourage many to stroll around the district, shopping, eating and even stopping into a favorite spot for a spot!
You may have noticed most of the flakes are up and some are even as bright as a new fallen snow! But we are not done yet. WRMS has 31 snowflakes and currently 19 are still available for adoption. Don’t let these poor 19, unloved flakes be left out. It’s simple to adopt a snowflake just send me an email at barry.hickman6@verizon.net make your commitment and check payable to West Roxbury Main Streets and we will add your name to the adoption list. Each adoption is just $75. You can adopt as a family, a business or get your neighbors together and purchase one for your street. You can even do it in memory of a loved one.
We are hoping to have all the snowflakes adopted before the Holiday House Tour scheduled for December 6th, but to kick off the season The Upper Crust has graciously offered to sponsor the Snowflake lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 28th from 12 noon to 1:30 P.M..
Stop in for cider and a slice….1727 Centre St. West Roxbury, MA. Look forward to seeing you all there!

T’was the Night Before Thanksgiving!
November 23, 2009

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday for several reasons. Not only is it one of the only holidays that nearly everyone celebrates (regardless of background or religion), but the whole point of the day is to stuff your face. You don’t have to buy any presents for anyone and the night before is like a holiday in and of itself.
I don’t know about the rest of the country, but here in Boston there has been a long running tradition of “going out” the night before Thanksgiving. It is a great night to see old friends, catch up, and build up an appetite (or headache) for the next day’s feast.
I remember the Wednesday before Thanksgiving being a big deal going back to high school. In those days it was all about the big rally for the Latin v English game. It was usually followed by a post rally party after school (which was around 10:30am) at a nearby field, or friends house and it was often hosted by some of the upper classmen (or upper classmen that had been “kept back”).
