Brendan Hanrahan, West Roxbury’s Newest Eagle Scout
March 3, 2009
Holy Name’s Monsignor Finn Hall was filled with family, friends, The Honorable Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Councilor John Tobin, Representative Michael Rush and Roxbury Latin Headmaster Kerry Brennan to witness Brendan Hanrahan’s elevation to Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest honor for a Boy Scout since 1911, when the Boy Scouts of America introduced the rank of Eagle Scout. Nationwide, only 1.8 million young men have achieved this honor. There are over 83 million boy scouts in the United States and only 2% of all scouts achieve this rank. On Friday night Brendan Hanrahan of Holy Name Troop 7 was added to this elite roster. A roster that includes, President Gerald Ford, Steven Spielberg, Jimmy Stewart and a little closer to home, Governor Michael Dukakis, Representative Michael Rush and Bill Barrett to name only a few. As you can see from the numbers, becoming an Eagle Scout is no easy task.
In order to attain this prestigious award Brendan had to earn a minimum 21 badges, plan and complete a community project and pass the Eagle Scout Review Board. In addition you must have Scout Spirit, which was abundantly clear as Brendan and his fellow scouts ushered their guests though the Court of Honor ceremony. The Ceremony includes an address from the Scoutmaster, guest remakes, a speech from the inductee and a special honor for one of Brendan’s early influences and mentors, Roy Hechavarria.
Brendan’s community project involved building an addition onto the existing owl exhibit at the Franklin Park Zoo. Brendan developed a plan, set a budget, collected materials and gathered a team to help execute the plan. The funding and materials for the project must come from donations. Now the owls have much better housing where they can spread their wings a little wider.
Brendan is the eldest child of Lynn and John Hanrahan, has two sisters a brother. All were on hand for this incredible achievement and honor. Brendan is a senior at The Roxbury Latin School and a most impressive young man.
